Environmental Scientist

Band 6 - Based in Edinburgh

Salary £26,715 - £30,000

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Environmental Scientist with database and GIS skills to join the Freshwater Ecology Group in Edinburgh, to develop and support scientific research on freshwater ecosystems. The post offers an opportunity to become a nationally and internationally recognised expert in the management, interrogation and analysis of large temporal and spatial freshwater datasets.

You will contribute to a range of high profile research projects, including long-term monitoring programmes generating high frequency monitoring data and large-scale studies using spatial data across scales ranging from catchments to UK, European and global scale.

Specific responsibilities and activities:

To be successful in this role you will be required to:

  • Design, implement, maintain and improve databases to support new and existing projects
  • Interrogate databases and analyse outputs to address a range of scientific questions
  • Produce tables, figures, maps and text suitable for reports, technical documents and peer reviewed publications, taking a lead role where appropriate

Skills and qualifications required:

  • Masters degree or PhD in earth/environmental sciences, geography, statistics or mathematics, with proven ability to design and improve databases within the context of ecological research
  • Excellent working knowledge of database software (Oracle, Microsoft Access), database management and design of database applications
  • Working knowledge of some or all the following programming languages: SQL, Python, R, Fortran.
  • Proven ability to work with spatial datasets and GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS, FME)
