I.M. Systems Group (www.imsg.com), a Federal Government Contractor located in Rockville, Maryland is currently seeking to hire an Environmental Scientist to conduct natural resource damage assessments and oversee habitat restoration after oil spills, at hazardous waste sites, and to address other environmental stressors in the Great Lakes Region.  This individual will work with NOAA’s Assessment and Restoration Division (ARD) under the Damage Assessment, Remediation, and Restoration Program (DARRP-www.DARRP.noaa.gov/) as part of NOAA’s Great Lakes Habitat Restoration Program in the areas of injury assessment, damage assessment, and habitat restoration. This position is located in NOAA’s Ann Arbor, Michigan offices.   

The Assessment and Restoration Division’s mission is to protect and restore coastal and marine resources injured by the release of oil or hazardous substances or direct physical impacts such as vessel groundings. 

Duties:

  • Provide technical support for the successful design and conduct of natural resource damage assessments, particularly assessing injury to fish and their habitat.
  • Participate in scaling the amount and type of restoration necessary to compensate the public and the environment for resource injuries.
  • Participate in negotiating settlements and agreements to recover damages from natural resource damage claims
  • Recommend and participate in monitoring projects to ensure cleanup or restoration objectives are met.
  • Develop and review environmental assessment documents for habitat restoration projects.
  • Review engineering designs and plans for sediment remediation and habitat restoration projects.
  • Assist in managing a variety of environmental projects to support NOAA’s habitat program in the Great Lakes Areas of Concern, including developing proposals, reporting on progress, and tracking budget and financial expenditures.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Doctorate degree in environmental science, preferably in one of more of the following sub-disciplines: aquatic toxicology, fisheries ecology, and environmental engineering.
  • Strong verbal and writing skills.
  • Strong computer and analytical skills
  • Self-motivated, energetic, strategic thinker that is comfortable working both independently and with others

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in assessing injury to Great Lakes coastal aquatic species and habitats.
  • Experience in implementing or overseeing habitat restoration projects.
  • Knowledge of damage assessment procedures mandated by CERCLA and OPA.
  • Experience working in litigation.
  • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in negotiations over environmental issues.
