Description |
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent organisation dedicated to protecting people's health in the United Kingdom. Combining public health, scientific expertise and research within one organisation, the Agency protects against the threat to health from infections, environmental hazards and emergencies which can include chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear threats.
The Air Pollution and Noise Unit provides advice on the effects of air pollution on health to Government, the HPA and the public. The unit runs the Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants (COMEAP), an internationally-respected expert Committee that produces reports summarising the key evidence on air pollution and health. The unit interacts closely with Government Departments to ensure that the evidence is incorporated appropriately into Government policy. The Toxicology Unit has a similar role providing advice on the health effects of chemicals in drinking water, other water sources, soil and waste. The Unit also leads for England and Wales on development of Human Biomonitoring for Public Health. The post will support the Air Pollution and Noise Unit and Toxicology Unit in developing advice for Government Departments, and others, on the effects of both outdoor and indoor air pollution on health and on monitoring of exposure or effects using human biomonitoring techniques. Development of this advice requires critical review of both epidemiological and toxicological studies and preparation of papers for expert Committees. The postholder will ensure the best communication of this advice to the public, including completing development of websites for COMEAP and for human biomonitoring. The human biomonitoring work includes development of guidance and national protocols for both acute and chronic exposure as well as sponsoring and supervising research into the development of novel biomarkers of exposure and effect. We are seeking a toxicologist, epidemiologist or a biological scientist from a related discipline. A relevant masters degree or equivalent experience is required. A PhD is desirable but not essential. The ideal person would have a keen interest in probing scientific evidence, a talent for analysing complex information and an ability to work effectively with people from a variety of disciplines. Experience in chemical risk assessment and/or previous work in the air pollution and health or biomonitoring fields would be an advantage. Who to contact from the unit for any questions (optional).
