ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The purpose of the Environmental Protection Program (EPP) is to strengthen the Dominican Republic’s ability to comply with the requirements of DR-CAFTA and thus conserve habitats, species and biodiversity, and protect the environment, including its air, water and soils.

The Environmental Protection Program Communication Specialist will be responsible for writing and editing communication materials to fulfill the program’s contractual reporting obligations to USAID, including weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual and final reports. S/he will also be responsible for writing and/or editing materials aimed to educate and inform the public regarding the activities and achievements of the program. Responsibilities will include fact checking reports and other communication material, developing web content, preparing Power Point presentations, managing program’s photo archive and other files, writing success stories and responding to public inquiries as the primary media contact for the program and main liaison to USAID/DR communications personnel. The Communication Specialist will also oversee the implementation of the communication strategy and branding requirements on DR-CAFTA environmental issues to be developed by the Program. 

This is a five year position, based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, unless the Environmental Protection Program ends earlier. S/he may be responsible for developing operational guidelines to ensure efficient management of information in the Environmental Protection Program and compliance with relevant regulations, particularly those associated with the branding and marking plan.  S/he may coordinate trainings/meetings and document activities, strategies and lessons learned as appropriate.  This position works under the supervision of the Environmental Protection Program Director.

The Communication Specialist will be responsible for maintaining an adequate flow of information among all partner institutions and will assist the Environmental Protection Program Director in obtaining and reviewing data inputs for reporting. Written products will include a monthly newsletter, quarterly and annual reports, and web-site articles/stories; they may also include magazine articles, executive-level speeches and op-ed pieces.  Duties may require overseeing the design and production of written materials and working with freelance writers, graphic designers, photographers, printers and other vendors and staff as necessary.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Social Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Languages or related field and 4 years related experience or equivalent combination.
• Experience writing or editing one or more of the following:  newsletter, magazine, annual report, and web-site articles/stories; or equivalent.
• Experience managing the communications activities within the context of international development assistance, USAID experience a plus. 
• Experience managing local and national media relations.
• Experience working with MS Office suite software including MS Word. Experience using advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet. 
• Fluency in English and Spanish, both written and spoken.
• Experience translating documents from one language to another.
• Experience editing and/or proofreading.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
• Bachelor’s degree in Social Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Languages or related field and 4-6 years related experience or equivalent combination.
• Superb writing, editing and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.  Ability to translate documents from one language to the other as necessary.
• Excellent organizational and proofreading skills. Attention to detail a must.
• Demonstrated experience in MS Office: Word, and Excel.  May require database management skills with ability to produce reports.  Ability to use advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet. 
• Service oriented.  Courteous, personable, diplomatic, tactful and experienced in dealing effectively and sensitively with all levels of staff and public.
• Ability to organize time and manage diverse activities. Meet deadlines.
• Demonstrated flexibility to changing situations and priorities.
• Familiarity with DR-CAFTA, NAFTA or other trade agreements a plus.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT –FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
• Serve as a team leader for assigned projects and coordinate the work of others.
• Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, and negotiating and contracting with vendors.
• May supervise administrative staff and/or volunteers, interns, or temporary staff.
• Must gain cooperation from individuals or groups over whom there is no direct authority in order to accomplish program goals.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Formulate and clearly communicate ideas to others.  Ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC and of the Environmental Protection Program to diverse groups including donors, members, board members, partner institutions, the public and others.
• Solid communication and presentation skills.
• Leverages constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the Conservancy.
• Demonstrated confidence in providing editorial advise and critiquing the writing of senior-level staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• Work is performed in a typical office setting but may require willingness to work long hours as required
• Occasional travel required.
• Work effectively with demanding constituents.
• Ability to work under stress during peak workload periods, particularly near reporting deadlines.
