  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  The purpose of the USAID Environmental Protection Program (USAID-EPP) is to strengthen the Dominican Republic’s ability to conserve habitats, species and biodiversity, and to protect the environment, including its air, water and soils.

The USAID Environmental Protection Program Communication Specialist will be responsible for producing communication materials to fulfill the program’s contractual reporting obligations to USAID, including weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual and final reports. This is a full time fix-termed position, anticipated to last for 4 years or less, dependent on funding.

The Communication Specialist will be responsible for maintaining an adequate flow of information among all partner institutions. S/he will be responsible for developing operational guidelines to ensure efficient management of information in the USAID Environmental Protection Program and compliance with relevant regulations, particularly those associated with the branding and marking plan. S/he will support the organization of USAID Environmental Protection Program events, including training's and meetings as appropriate. S/he will also document activities, strategies and lessons learned.

S/he will also be responsible for writing and/or editing materials aimed to educate and inform the public regarding the activities and achievements of the program, as needed. Written products will include a monthly newsletter, quarterly, annual reports, success stories and web-site articles; they may also include magazine articles, Power Point presentations, executive-level speeches and op-ed pieces.  Duties may require overseeing the design and production of written materials and working with freelance writers, graphic designers, photographers, printers and other vendors and staff as necessary.

Responsibilities will also include fact checking reports and other communication material, managing program’s photo archive and other files and responding to public inquiries, as the primary media contact for the program and main liaison to USAID/DR communications personnel.
  BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 years related experience or equivalent combination.
• Experience managing the information and reporting within the context of international development assistance, USAID experience a plus. 
• Experience writing or editing one or more of the following:  newsletter, magazine, annual report, and web-site articles/stories; or equivalent.
• Experience managing local and national media relations.
• Experience working with MS Office suite software. Experience using advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet. 
• Fluency in English and Spanish, both written and spoken.
• Experience translating documents from one language to another.
• Experience working with a wide range of people, such as staff, implementing partners, the public and/or government agencies.
  ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
  KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
• Bachelor’s degree and 4-6 years related experience or equivalent combination.
• Superb writing, editing and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.  Ability to translate documents from one language to the other as necessary.
• Excellent organizational and proofreading skills. Attention to detail a must.
• Demonstrated experience in MS Office: Word, and Excel.  May require database management skills with ability to produce reports.  Ability to use advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet. 
• Service oriented.  Courteous, personable, diplomatic, tactful and experienced in dealing effectively and sensitively with all levels of staff and public.
• Ability to organize time and manage diverse activities. Meet deadlines.
• Demonstrated flexibility to changing situations and priorities.
• Attention to detail and ability to follow rigorous branding requirements.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT –FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
• Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, and negotiating and contracting with vendors.
• May supervise administrative staff and/or volunteers, interns, or temporary staff.
• Must gain cooperation from individuals or groups over whom there is no direct authority in order to accomplish program goals.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Formulate and clearly communicate ideas to others.  Ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC and of the Environmental Protection Program to diverse groups including donors, members, board members, partner institutions, the public and others.
• Solid communication and presentation skills.
• Leverages constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the Conservancy.
• Demonstrated confidence in providing editorial advise and critiquing the writing of senior-level staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• Work is performed in a typical office setting but will require moderate travel to project sites in the field.
• May require willingness to work long or flexible hours.
• Ability to work in a fast paced, stressful environment and manage deadlines.
