Background:Fenland District Council is a rural District Council covering the market towns of Wisbech, March, Chatteris and Whittlesey. The Council prides itself on working hard for a community which has pockets of deprivation when compared to the rest of Cambridgeshire. Fenland Council was rated as an excellent Council by comprehensive performance assessment. The Council has a very strong ‘one team’ culture which means no one member of staff – including Chief Executive – is any more valuable than another. There are no qualifications on doors or letter heads and everyone is valued for their contribution. We let priorities dictate our budgets not budgets our priorities. This culture creates a way of working which encourages cross service collaboration and creative thinking. It allows flexibility about how we solve problems and colleagues who want to help and get involved. Objective:An opportunity has arisen to develop and implement community driven environmental programmes within Fenland in order to achieve the council’s corporate aims and to drive forward a number of projects under our ‘Streets Ahead’ environmental priority. The initial objective of this opportunity is to work with the Council’s environmental services team to ensure our recent waste collection round review and service review is supported by a set of sustainable management solutions to both customer and staffing issues, which will be designed by the successful candidate. The role will develop to implement a wider set of community and Council driven environmental projects which the Council wishes to develop. Examples include; increasing community volunteering, engaging with business and communities to increase the use of energy saving techniques and to drive forward wider policy issues for the Council linked to our current core Strategy development.
