Description

We’re looking for a number of Environmental Monitoring Officers to work within our Sampling & Collection and Analysis & Reporting teams carrying out office, laboratory and field based duties across Anglian region.

Within the Sampling & Collection team this primarily involves the collection of samples from rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal waters and canals, including the seasonal collection of invertebrate and diatom samples. There will be a need to liaise and communicate effectively with internal customers. You’ll coach and mentor team members and coordinate their fieldwork.

Within the Analysis & Reporting team you’ll be required to undertake a wide range of freshwater biological monitoring and analysis duties, including invertebrate, plant, fish and habitat surveys, specifically to assist with Water Framework Directive delivery. You’ll also undertake ecological surveys and analysis in response to pollution incidents. Additionally, for the Ipswich and Norwich posts you will also be involved in some of our marine work.

The teams

Our Sampling & Collection teams are responsible for the collection of routine chemical, ecology and fisheries samples and data through the delivery of our monitoring programmes. The information resulting from the programmes is used by the Analysis and Reporting teams to assess and report on the ecological status of the aquatic environment, helping us plan and deliver water quality improvement to meet the obligations of the Water Framework Directive.

Our Analysis & Reporting teams conduct a full range of freshwater biological monitoring and analyse all key monitoring data, both chemical and ecological. These data provide input to work related to Water Resource Management, Water Quality Management and the Water Framework Directive. The information resulting from analysis, interpretation and investigation is used to report on the ecological status of the aquatic environment, helping us plan and deliver improvements to meet the obligations of the Water Framework Directive.
