Description

As an Environmental Monitoring Officer in the Analysis & Reporting Team you'll be part of a team responsible for understanding and reporting on the state of the environment in Lancashire and Cumbria. You'll develop, plan and co-ordinate ecological investigative monitoring work and follow through a number of established Water Framework Directive investigations, reporting on your findings. Initially the role will be biology based with the aim of becoming multifunctional to cover ecology, fish and possibly chemical water quality.

The role is mainly office based with a small amount of field work carrying out specialist surveys and pollution investigations. There will be a significant amount of data analysis and report writing that requires the interpretation of complex data sets. A good understanding of, and experience in using, statistical techniques to analyse data would be an advantage.

The Team

The Analysis and Reporting team forms part of the regional monitoring service. We carry out water quality and ecological surveys and investigations. We analyse and report data to provide evidence that informs decision making. Our evidence enables the delivery of environmental outcomes to meet statutory and national requirements.

Experience/skills required

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline, or have relevant experience;
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of water ecosystems with particular regard to plants, fish and invertebrates;
  • The ability to interpret and report on complex data;
  • Excellent verbal and report writing skills;
  • An understanding of, and experience in using, statistical techniques to analyse data would be an advantage;
  • Laboratory skills such as invertebrate and diatom identification would be an advantage;
  • Experience of river habitat surveys, hydro-acoustic surveys, pollution investigations, macrophyte surveys, saltmarsh, opportunistic macroalgae, benthic invertebrates and electo-fishing would be an advantage;
  • Chemical water quality knowledge would be an advantage;
  • Good IT skills are essential. Knowledge of GIS and databases systems would be advantageous;
  • Excellent communication skills and strong customer focus, with the ability to work effectively with internal and external customers;
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team;
  • A full driving licence is essential;
  • 4x4 driving experience, boat handling and trailer towing skills may be required for the job and training will be provided.
