Environmental Markets Specialist
Resource Economist 

Ducks Unlimited seeks a dynamic and motivated economist to provide science-based support for its conservation and environmental-market efforts in the 7-state Great Plains Region (North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana). The environmental specialist will work closely with conservation managers and biologists, partnering agencies, non-governmental agencies and private landowners.

Specific Duties:

  • Manage and promote grassland carbon offset program by completing certification of methodology, pursuing potential buyers, and by interacting with DU realty staff, outside partners and agricultural carbon offset community.
  • Identify new revenue opportunities from DU’s conservation work in environmental markets, Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, Impact Investing or other non-traditional revenue sources.
  • Seek and apply for grants to fund associated conservation programs, public policy and/or science efforts related to this position.
  • Collaborate with research staff in the development of program supporting science.
  • Maintain awareness and collaborate on public policy related to eco-assets, ecosystem services, climate change and energy policy legislation.
  • Development and/or synthesis of science-based information to support development of an eco-asset based conservation program.
  • Development of business-related information to guide management and growth of the ecosystem services program within the region over time.
  • Apply and integrate the science and business information into operational aspects of delivery of eco-asset projects that align with DU’s mission and delivery structure.

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Economics with a specialization in Natural Resource Management, or a related field required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Three years of combined graduate education and/or experience in economics, natural resource management, conservation planning or a related field.
  • Familiarity with environmental markets and certification standards for greenhouse gas offsets, biodiversity banking, wetland mitigation, and water quality trading.
  • Interest in applied conservation research—especially the social sciences and/or human dimensions.
  • Knowledge of agricultural practices in the northern Great Plains, federal farm programs, and conservation policy.
  • Strong writing and communication skills, ability to communicate and interact with diverse groups.

The position will be stationed in the Great Plains Regional Office in Bismarck, North Dakota; however consideration will also be given to our field office in Fort Collins, Colorado.
