Our Freshwater Institute located in Shepherdstown, WV is seeking an intern to perform analysis of water and wastewater to support research needs and regulatory requirements for projects related to aquaculture and wastewater treatment. This is a summer internship that continues during the school semester and the individual should be able to work 10-15 hours per week during the semester.

The qualified candidate will:

  • Perform chemical, physical, microbiological and biological analysis of water and wastewater. Analyses include: Total suspended solids, biological oxygen demand,
    chemical oxygen demand, processing and enumerating bacteria, color, transmittance, turbidity, total phosphorus and nitrogen, pH, carbon dioxide, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite, and others as needed.
  • Operate laboratory instruments/equipment such as pH and dissolved oxygen meters, spectrophotometers, and autoclaves.
  • Set up computer data files, record, compile and graph laboratory data.
  • Assist in developing new test procedures using standard reference materials or new instrumentation, and write Standard Operating Procedures for new tests.
  • Work in the field when necessary.
  • Perform clean-up and maintenance in the laboratory and assist others outside of the lab on other areas of the campus as needed.

Prospective interns should be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science or a related discipline. Prior experience in a laboratory setting is helpful. This individual must be dedicated to maintaining high laboratory standards with regard to quality and safety and must possess good organization, record keeping, and communication skills. This position requires proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word applications. Must be able to follow Standard Operating Procedures, detail oriented and flexible with regard to changing schedules. The applicant will be able to stand for long periods of time, and be capable of lifting up to 30 lbs.
