Overview:
I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG) www.imsg.com is currently seeking to hire an Environmental Education Coordinator to work at the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office (NCBO) field office located at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point, Virginia. The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office’s mission is in focusing NOAA’s capabilities in science, service, and stewardship to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. NCBO is charged with monitoring the status and reporting the results of sponsored research on non-invasive oysters and other scientific topics conducted by other institutions including state and local governments. The qualified candidate will be involved in fulfilling the goals of the NCBO mission to include providing science-based information and tools required to facilitate ecosystem approaches to management and stewardship; enhancing implementation of ecosystem-based management through improved coordination and assistance and targeted protection and restoration; and fostering ecosystem stewardship through increased environmental awareness, knowledge, and literacy in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
Duties:
  • Provide support for the Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) Program
  • Administer NOAA B-WET awards, including award processing and monitoring, site visits, and technical assistance to grantees
  • Conduct outreach about the B-WET program in Virginia and West Virginia to maintain number and geographic distribution of applicants
  • Support B-WET competitive process, including reviewer recruitment and coordination
  • Strengthen the environmental literacy network throughout the state of Virginia by providing NOAA-related materials and technical support to partner organizations.
  • Ensure adequate and up-to-date education resources at NOAA@Nauticus Education Resource Center
  • Coordinate education programs with Virginia National Estuarine Research Reserve and Virginia Sea Grant
  • Promote and disseminate NOAA-based science information through partner organizations
  • Assist Virginia partners in developing and strengthening educational programs that provide meaningful watershed experiences for K-12 students and related training to teachers
  • Work with the Environmental Science Training Center (ESTC) to create and evaluate trainings targeting environmental education professionals
  • Coordinate with the ESTC to conduct onsite and virtual seminars that feature NOAA scientists discussing topics relevant and timely to environmental education professionals; evaluate the effectiveness of these seminars
  • Encourage environmental education organizations to include NOAA content in staff trainings and support these efforts by providing content, speakers, or other appropriate services
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of emerging NOAA research and products for inclusion in ESTC programming
  • Create and maintain a college preparation and internship program for office
  • Develop and promote scholarship, fellowship, and internship opportunities within NOAA and NCBO
  • Recruit candidates for scholarships, fellowships, and internships
  • Identify and market college preparation materials that encourage the pursuit of NOAA-related careers
Qualifications:
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills are required.
  • Experience in environmental education and literacy is highly desirable.
  • Grant experience desirable.
  • Master’s Degree is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience working at NOAA or other government office is desirable.
