Remote working under flexible working arrangements are available, subject to business requirements.  The post-holder will be required to attend meetings at various localities in the UK, and potentially internationally, involving overnight stays away from home.

Looking for an opportunity to have a genuine impact on Government policy across the UK and around the world? Then JNCC is the employer for you.

Who are JNCC?

We’re the environment’s best kept secret. Established in 1990, we’re the UK’s statutory advisor on issues affecting the natural environment across the UK and internationally. Our primary role is advising all four Governments of the UK. With most of our work being within Government, our public profile is low but our impact is high.

What’s the role?

JNCC provides advice on matters as varied as sustainable governance of the UK’s offshore and overseas marine environments, understanding the impacts of the UK’s overseas trade and development assistance on the natural environment, and supporting the UK’s domestic implementation of its international environmental obligations.

Society is not isolated from nature and we can’t hope to achieve sustainable use of the natural environment without engaging with economic systems of our society. This senior advisory role will further strengthen JNCC’s environmental economics advice to Government, helping to embed environmental economics thinking across JNCC and wider Government.

You’ll be supporting a range of JNCC advice functions across both the marine and terrestrial environments in the UK, the UK’s Overseas Territories and internationally. Your workload will be varied and regularly changing in line with the priorities of our customers. In the first year you will likely be focused on our Official Development Assistance advisory function. You won’t merely be responding to work directed by our customers. For the right candidate, there will be ample opportunity to spot, develop and lead novel advisory work across Government and more broadly.

Who are we looking for?

As befits an influential Government advisory role, we’re looking for an individual well-versed in both the theory and practice of environmental economics. Effective communication is essential, as is an ability to effectively build and maintain relationships (both internally and externally). A skilled project manager, you’ll ideally have strong experience of delivering rigorous and relevant advice in a public policy environment. Full details of the role are included in the job description. For an individual with the right characteristics, but limited experience, we can provide training and support to develop your skills.

We’re small enough (c.200 staff) that you’ll know everyone by name, but big enough that we have all the skills, resources and people you’ll need to get the job done. We have a very flexible and welcoming organisational culture. Our Executive Management focus on supporting advisers with the freedom and tools they need to get their jobs done. You will benefit from our supportive workplace culture, excellent holiday and pension benefits, as well as an exciting job in a unique environment. No two days will be the same and we welcome diversity in all its forms.

The closing date for this post is 09:00 on 29 June 2020

We will assess you against the Behaviours listed below, and the Experience and Technical requirements outlined in the Post Details.

If you successfully reach the interview stage, you will be asked to give a 10-minute presentation (details of this will be sent to candidates before interview).
