Date Available: July 1, 2008  REMSA Inc. is seeking an experienced, highly motivated, and results oriented Environmental Economist to fill an immediate opening in the Gloucester, MA area.  The incumbent must be familiar with the unique issues related with Environmental/Ecological Economic issues, specifically, knowledge of fisheries and the Northeast Region of the United States.   

JOB DESCRIPTION:The incumbent will be charged with assisting in the ability of the successful completion of the goals set forth through various pieces of legislation designed to conserve and protect natural marine resources in the Northeastern U.S.  You will be a part of an interdisciplinary team charged with managing resources important both commercially and ecologically to this region of the country. Duties include, but are not limited to:                                                          

·          Provide assistance in collecting and reviewing information and technical data related to fisheries and protected species ·          Performing on-site visits to gain insight and assist in evaluating the impact and adherence of activities to meeting standards and goals set forth by the project and mandates by State and Federal Government

·          Enter and record data into database management systems for storage and review.                                         

·          Generate documents and produce reports including assessments and impact statements based on information gathered and reviewed·          Prepare a variety of correspondence in response to inquiries and initiatives for internal and public review

·          Participate in outreach, education, and training activities including conferences and public forums

  • Perform additional administrative and field work duties as assigned.  

 REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record is required Ability to pass a background investigation & to obtain security clearance requiredEducation: B.S. in Economics with coursework in natural resource economics is required.  Additionally, 2-3 years of experience is preferred.  Skills: Experience writing environmental assessments is required. Previous experience writing Environmental Impact Statements is preferred.

·          An understanding of the fishing industry in the Northeastern U.S. and the issues and pressures it is subject to Knowledge of the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act and the agencies charged with enforcing them

·          Technical knowledge of biology, ecology, and oceanography preferred                                                  

 ·          Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills, both written and verbal. A professional demeanor

·          Strong analytical skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to understand complex technical information                 

·          Excellent time management skills and the ability to work under deadlines and balance multiple assignments

·          The ability to travel as necessary                    

·          Strong computer skills including knowledge of MS Office programs used to generate reports and documents
