Background

Bedford Borough Council took over responsibility for the collection and disposal of waste in April 2009 when it became a unitary authority as a result of Local Government Reorganisation. Prior to this Bedford Borough Council was part of the Bedfordshire Authorities Waste Partnership (BAWP).

Following the abolition of BAWP in April 2009, Bedford Borough Council has undertaken to produce its own waste management strategy under the Waste and Emission Trading (WET) Act 2003. The strategy is to:
•Reduce total waste arising, maximise reuse and recycling
•Reduce reliance on landfill in line with European and UK legislation
•Increase public awareness of waste issues
•Achieve best value in all aspects of waste management, and
•Manage waste in a way that takes account of Bedford Borough Sustainable Community Strategy 7 Strategic priorities

As Environmental Data and Performance Officer you would have a crucial role in providing data and performance information on the Council’s waste and recycling. You would be part of a small dedicated team of data/performance staff and would be helping to promote good practice within the Council.

This role is critical to the accurate verification of waste tonnage and invoice data relating to the treatment of Bedford Borough Council’s waste and recycling. You will be responsible for checking, coordinating and submitting waste data and performance information to central government and senior Council officers. This includes completing statutory returns for government bodies, auditing and verifying data provided by Contactors, and preparing a monthly breakdown of all waste performance information. The processing of the Asbestos, Clinical and Bulky waste collection services also falls within your remit.
