Background

Birkbeck has formed a partnership with three other University of London colleges: the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the Institute of Education and the School of Oriental and African Studies, to implement environmental strategies with the support of a shared Environmental Manager. The colleges are all members of The Bloomsbury Colleges group which exists to promote collaborative working on a range of projects.

Each institution has a distinctive mission as summarized below.

Birkbeck is a world-class institution, a vibrant centre of academic engagement and excellence and the UK’s leading provider of part-time, evening education for mature students. There are nearly 19,000 students studying undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research degrees.  Founded in 1823 as the London Mechanics’ Institute, Birkbeck was incorporated in the University of London in 1920.

SOAS is the only higher education institution specializing in the study of Asia and Africa and started in 1916. It currently has 3,000 students. SOAS as a whole has a strong commitment to the study of a wide range of languages, literatures and cultures, many of which are taught nowhere else in the UK.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine aims to contribute to the improvement of health worldwide through the pursuit of excellence in research, post graduate teaching and advanced training in national and international public health and tropical medicine.

The Institute of Education is committed to pursuing excellence in education and related areas of social science and professional practice.  The Institute works closely with a network of schools and colleges in London and beyond and has partnerships with leading institutions around the world.

All four institutions are based in the Bloomsbury area of London, close to the British Museum.

Objective

To promote environmental activities across the Bloomsbury Group Partner Colleges (Birkbeck College, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, School of Oriental and African Studies, and the Institute of Education) – supporting the sustainability ambitions and environmental policies of the Group.

To engage with staff and students across the Colleges via various media to promote sustainability activities.

To assist in designing promotional campaigns and preparing promotional materials.

Benefits of this opportunity

The successful candidate will have opportunities to learn about being a team player, developing communication skills in different mediums and will gain project management skills including event planning and management, project implementation and evaluation. The graduate will also gain experience in partnership working, and behaviour change for sustainability.

The full time nature of this role will enable the graduate to develop not only the skills and outputs required for the objectives, but also to work as an integral part of the Environment Team to create and drive forward further initiatives across the university’s staff, students and estates.

The change agent will have access to the Change Agents UK Workshops and other learning and networking benefits such as a Professional Development Award and having one to one support from a Change Agents UK coordinator. Previous post holders in similar positions have gone to further work in this, and related sectors.

Future employment potential and options

The role is for 8 months, however, the role may be able to be extended dependent upon its success and the development of any further needs that the University may have.
