Description

GRID-Arendal, with its specialization in translating complex environmental and socio-economic information into understandable, visual formats for decision makers and the general public, is seeking a multi-talented Environmental Cartographer. The ideal candidate has a broad knowledge of current environmental issues, as strong sense of how to synthesize different types of information into clear and easily readable maps and graphics, has GIS experience and is familiar with up-to-date communication tools and technology. This position requires the ability to thrive in a team environment, handle multiple tasks and meet critical deadlines.

Duties/Responsibilities:
The position reports to the Head, Communications Unit. Core responsibilities include
  • Work closely with project managers and clients and assist them in designing maps, graphics, and other visualization products.
  • Provide advice to staff on options for visualization of scientific and geopolitical data sets, including options using new technology and digital platforms.
  • Assist staff in the development and implementation of geographic databases, assist with database management and maintenance, and provide support in conducting spatial analyses.
  • Manage project costs and ensure that project deadlines are met.
Required knowledge/experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in geography, cartography, GIS, environmental science or a closely related field. Preferably at least 3-5 years of working experience.
  • Broad knowledge of global environmental issues.
  • Excellent design, visualization, graphic and cartographic skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work well with a diverse team of people.
  • Must be able to multi-task and troubleshoot for technical solutions.
  • High level of proficiency in using professional illustration, photo manipulation and layout and design software.
  • Experience with geospatial data collection, analysis, and/or conversion with ESRI products (such as ArcGIS, ArcMap, ArcToolBix, ArcInfo, ArcView, ArcSDE).
  • Experience in the creation and maintenance of GIS data. 

Desirable knowledge/experience

  • Experience incorporating GIS data into Google Earth or creating custom applications for Google Earth.
  • Design experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.

  • Ability to be self-directed, work alone and in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision and to tight deadlines.
Compensation:
GRID-Arendal’s salary system is linked to the Norwegian Government salary system. It is based on education and experience, and is negotiable according to expertise. Salaries are subject to Norwegian tax regulations. Insurance and personal benefits are provided in addition to salary. International staff receives additional benefits.
