Environmental Analytical Chemist

Based in Lancaster

CEH has a centralised laboratory with expertise in the analysis of environmental samples for organic and inorganic constituents and the stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. This analytical chemistry groupsupports the research conducted by CEH and collaborators. 

We are looking to appoint an Environmental Analytical Chemist to conduct chemical analysis in environmental samples in a wide range of matrices from water to soils, biota, etc. Duties will include sample preparation and analysis of nutrients, metals, isotopes and organic compounds. Initially the job will involve mainly nutrients measurements such as: determination of physical properties such as pH, conductivity, moisture content and loss of ignition and the operation of automated techniques: alkalinity, ion chromatography, automated colorimetry, carbon and nitrogen analyser and an elemental analyser.  However, depending on the science needs this person is expected to perform other type of chemical measurements and sample preparation.

Skills & Qualifications Required 

  • A background in Environmental Chemistry, competence in chemical analysis and some relevant analytical experience is essential.
  • Experience of working in a laboratory accredited to ISO 17025 will be beneficial, however full training will be given in the quality system and laboratory safety.
  • You will possess strong communication, team working, decision making skills, and flexibility and have proven experience of producing high quality data.
  • Ideally you should be familiar with packages such as Excel, Word and Email. You will also need basic numeracy skills.
