Description
The role

You'll be in a team responsible for leading the regulatory water supply contact with water companies and other key partners on strategic water resource issues and initiatives in the South West.

The team also helps with the delivery of environmental improvements. You'll have to request, analyse and interpret data/information from internal and external sources.

This will include collecting, interpreting and disseminating information relating to:

• water use;

• identified and predicted environmental pressures;

• future water needs of people and the environment;

• working on plans for meeting those requirements for water.

The most interesting part of the job may be where you use analysis to make a point or help a change that reduces water taken from the environment but still secures essential water supplies.

The team

The water resources team works closely with Area and national teams to deliver water plan audits, the water resources section of the National Environment Programme and operational water management actions to protect and enhance the water environment.

The key challenge is to provide balanced advice to government on water company plans and build a constructive relationship with strategic water users as an environmental regulator whilst seeking enhancement to the water environment through improved water management.

Experience/skills required

The successful applicant must demonstrate:

• some knowledge of water resource management;

• use of interpersonal skills for working in a technical discipline;

• examples of analytical skills particularly manipulating large electronic documents and spreadsheets;

• examples of verbal and written communication skills;

• how they are able to work as part of a team and network effectively with other teams.

A degree or equivalent in an environmental discipline is essential.

You'll be expected to have an interest in water use issues, measured river flows and groundwater processes, water demand management and water supply side measures.

The job offers the opportunity to build-up or extend your knowledge in these areas and/or develop a specialism in a specific area of water resources such as climate change vulnerability/demand management which can assist the wider team on water resources management plan and drought plan issues and help feed into national ways of working.
