The role

We’re looking for an Environment Officer to work in Herefordshire based in the Herefordshire and Lower Wye Land and Water Team. You’ll join a team of Environment Officers working on improving/protecting the quality of the River Wye and its tributaries. This will involve you responding to pollution incidents, working in partnership with other organisations, commenting on development proposals and undertaking various types of compliance activities.

Your duties will include owning a part of the catchment and leading on the delivery of projects/initiatives to protect and improve the water environment. It will be essential that you work closely with colleagues within the Environment Agency and with external partners. You’ll need to be flexible and able to prioritise your work effectively. 

You’ll also be required to have an incident management role, which might involve being on a standby rota.

The team

You’ll be based in the Herefordshire and Lower Wye Land and Water Team, working primarily in Herefordshire, although your base office will be in Tewkesbury. You’ll also need to work frequently with our partners in Natural Resources Wales who also have responsibility for parts of the Wye catchment this will involve working at their office in Monmouth periodically.

Experience/skills required

You’ll:

• be either an experienced Level A Environment Officer who is close to progressing to Level B or you’ll be or
  have experience of being a Level B Environment Officer;

• have an interest in rivers, their ecology and their relationship with the land they drain;

• have the ability to work both independently and with others to achieve outcomes, and to communicate
  effectively;

• have a track record of developing good relationships with partners/customers and you will have strong
  influencing skills;

• have a good understanding of agriculture, the agricultural community and agri-environment schemes;

• be familiar with what the Water Framework Directive requires us to achieve and some of the key
  challenges in the Wye catchment;

• preferably be qualified to degree level in an environmental discipline, or have some experience of dealing
  with environmental issues.

Ideally, you’ll have an understanding of the enforcement sanctions available to us, and hold/previously held a Level 2 warrant, or be close to gaining one.

Additional useful information

This is a permanent full time post, based at our main area office in Tewkesbury. The post requires a full UK Driving licence be held. The post comes with a lease car.
