Description of the job

Salary: £25,023 - £26,340 

The role

Your role will be primarily the planning, delivery and reporting of the freshwater fisheries monitoring programme including management of seasonal fisheries staff, providing good quality environment data in a timely manner to support managers when making operational decisions. You must to be trained and signed off to Officer in Charge (OIC) for the delivery of the electric fishing monitoring programme. Other activities, include liaison with internal and external customers, coaching and mentoring team members, incident response and assisting other team members with the delivery of other monitoring activities. Regular updates to management on programme progress. Working over five days per week. (37hours) 

The team

The team consists of Environment Monitoring Officers 1 & 2 and Assistants responsible for delivering a wide range of monitoring programmes and data collection in both freshwater and marine environments. The information resulting from these activities is used by the Analysis and Reporting team, FGB, EMTS and others to determine the quality of the fisheries environment, from which the Environment Agency can plan and deliver fisheries and habitat improvement plans.

Experience/skills required

Ideally you will educated to O level standard, member of a professional organisation and must be a fully competent electric fishing Officer in Charge (OIC) holding the advanced electric fishing certificate. You will have a number of years experience in a similar role. Freshwater fish identification is a requirement and marine species knowledge would be desirable. The following boat qualifications, including Advanced powerboat (level 2) with a commercial endorsement, Professional practices and responsibilities, Day skipper theory, RYA First aid, Radar, Sea survival and VHF radio, would be advantageous to the teams monitoring delivery.

Must be able to confidently demonstrate the following experience and skills;

Additional useful information
 
Operating out of a base at Tyneside House, Newcastle upon Tyne. An Agency vehicle will be made available for field work.

You may be lone working during these tasks, working outside in all weathers and some tasks can be physically demanding. All personal protective equipment will be supplied.

As travel to field sites in the Northumberland Durham and Tees Area is required you will occasionally be required to stay away from home.
