Work with Environment Florida to protect Florida’s unique environment

Whether it's our world-famous beaches and estuaries, our springs or our storied "river of grass," Florida's natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways.

Yet the places we love and the environmental values so many of us share are too often threatened by powerful corporations, shortsighted politicians and others.

Right now, Environment Florida is working to save Florida’s shores from drilling, save the Everglades and other key natural areas from development and pollution, and make Florida a leader in solar energy.

When decisions like these are being made about Florida's environment, our elected officials hear plenty from the oil companies, huge agricultural operations, developers and other powerful interests.

Environment Florida’s Field Associate will work to make sure our elected officials hear from every day Floridians about the importance of protecting Florida’s unique environment - through petitions, emails, letters, phone calls and more, all delivered just when it matters most.  The Field Associate will also build and mobilize broad coalitions of like-minded groups to work with us, and focusing the media’s attention on most pressing threats to Florida’s environment.

You’ll work with one of the leading environmental groups in Florida

Environment Florida is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy group. Our professional staff combines independent research, practical ideas and tough-minded advocacy to overcome the opposition of powerful special interests and win real results for Florida's environment. Environment Florida draws on 30 years of success in tackling top environmental problems. We have led efforts to fund Everglades restoration, keep our shores safe from oil drilling, bring renewable energy to Florida, cut Florida’s global warming pollution, improve the gas mileage of new cars and trucks and much more.

You’ll learn how to run winning campaigns for the environment

Environment Florida is a part of the Environment America federation, a group of 29 state-based environmental advocacy nonprofits. Each year, Environment America hires passionate, talented and committed recent college graduates like you to join its two-year Fellowship Program, a program designed to give you the training you need, and put you in the right place at the right time, so you can roll up your sleeves and make a difference right away.

You’ll work with experienced advocates and organizers to make an immediate impact

If you’re hired to be the Environment Florida Field Associate, you will be a member of the Environment America 2012-2014 Fellowship Program. This means that in addition to getting guidance and feedback from your staff director in Florida, you’ll participate in classroom-style trainings throughout the year with other Environment America staff, including some of the nation’s top environmental advocates and organizers.

As a Fellow, you’ll learn how to plan, run, and win state and national campaigns.  You’ll learn how to research and identify effective solutions to critical problems – like those facing Florida’s landscape – and how to build and mobilize powerful constituencies to get behind your campaign. You’ll lobby lawmakers, publish opinion pieces in major newspapers and on key websites, set up and speak at news conferences, organize town hall meetings and rallies, and run citizen outreach campaigns to educate the public, build membership and raise money for our work. You’ll even recruit interns, activists, and future fellows to join Environment Florida and Environment America in our work.  In your second year a fellow, you’ll polish your skills and take on even more responsibility.

The Fellowship is only the beginning

You will develop relationships with lawmakers and community leaders throughout Florida, earn media coverage for important issues, raise funds, build membership, recruit and manage staff and volunteers, and run grassroots campaigns to protect Florida’s environment. Bottom line: you’ll make a real difference.

After just two years of hard work, you’ll have the skills and experience that will set you apart from most recent college graduates and you’ll be prepared to take on even more leadership at Environment Florida, elsewhere in the Environment America federation, or in the larger environmental community.
