Introduction

The English Fisheries Outreach Officer (EFOO) will be responsible for implementing and delivering the Inshore Fisheries Project and contribute to delivering the MSC’s overarching aims and objectives of various projects. Working in collaboration with the other members of the outreach team to deliver a consistent approach to European fisheries and commercial outreach, the post holder will contribute to developing the MSC concept in the UK market and engaging fisheries in the UK market.

The post will be responsible for outreach to English fisheries with a focus on the inshore sector, and will liaise closely with work going on elsewhere in the UK and Europe. The post will also work with national MSC focused external projects, promoting the MSC brand and increasing the support for the program across a broad range of interest groups including; fisheries and supply chain stakeholders; government representatives; and partners in the NGO community. The Inshore Fisheries Project in England will take up the majority of the workload and outreach involves presentations, relationship building, essentially explaining the MSC concept and certification program to potential clients (fisheries or other organisations) and working with fisheries as they develop management plans based on Pre-Assessment outputs.

Required Skills

The ideal candidate will have a post-graduate degree or equivalent experience in fisheries or marine conservation biology or environmental management; experience of working with the fisheries capture sector and be able to demonstrate understanding of resource sustainability issues is a necessity; and demonstrated experience working with stakeholders and other external parties. Previous work with the MSC assessment process and/or an understanding of the role of ecolabelling an advantage.
