Job Title:                              Engineering Technician=0.5, Teaching Assistant=0.5 Working hours:                  40 hours per week, 5 days per week flexible. Weekend working required covering duty engineer rota, courses and commitments.  Salary:                                   £13,900 per annum Status:                               This is a permanent post subject to successful completion of six month probation period. Job summary: CAT’s engineering department is responsible for energy systems at CAT, with a view to maximising use of renewable energy whilst maintaining a secure and regular supply.  This includes:·        Working with the engineering department and maintenance teams at CAT.·        Support the installation and maintenance of engineering systems and associated record keeping.·        Contribute to other maintenance tasks as required liaising with engineering and other staff.·        Provide teaching support, assistance and develop teaching practice with the courses department. Responsibilities ·      Advising staff on efficient use of energy.·      Day to day operation and maintenance of energy systems at CAT.·      Provision of heat and other services to offices, lecture rooms, teaching spaces and other facilities.·      Day to day operation and maintenance of mechanical systems such as the Cliff Railway.·      Provide support and teach on course programs.·      Report to senior Engineer and Course Directors.·      Responsible for supervising long term volunteers. Specific Duties·      Installation, maintenance and operation of service systems at CAT (Hot water, heating, appliances etc).·      Maintenance of workshops in good order and to comply with relevant statutory and good house keeping requirements.·      Maintenance of written records, including maintenance and repair of generating equipment.·      To assist in the operation and maintenance of the CHP, boilers, heat-main system and electrical systems.·      To work with engineering department on other projects as required.    Engineering·      To liaise with the Engineering Department budget head regarding annual budgets. To operate within agreed annual budget.·      To assist in the drawing up of annual work plans and training plans for the department.·      To attend regular departmental meetings and to keep other members of the department informed about activities.·      To liaise with other members of the department regarding prioritisation and allocation of work.·      To act as duty engineer on a rota basis. Education and Information·      Teaching – preparation of course notes and delivery of lectures in liaison with the CAT Charity Courses Co-ordinator and Education Department.·      To assist CAT Charity’s information and CAT plc’s media departments with enquiries on energy issues.·      To provide input into the design and content of site energy displays. To liaise with the Display Circuit Development Group and the Display Co-ordinators regarding these displays. General ·      To comply with internal management and monitoring procedures as required by the organisation.·      Following successful completion of a six month probationary period, to participate in the wider organisational management structure, including attending staff meetings, participate in and contribute to various working sub-groups.·      To take part in CAT co-operative management system, including strategy groups.·      To keep themselves informed of the day to day running of CAT via minutes and other communication channels.·      To undertake rota duties as agreed by the staff and body from time to time.·      Other duties as requested by the elected overview management group.·      Comply with relevant health and safety regulations at all times. All Permanent Staff – Co-operative Duties 
  • To attend a minimum of 6 monthly staff meetings per year (or such other number as may be agreed with the Management Group).
  • To consider issues presented to the staff body and be involved in the consensus decision-making process regarding such issues.
  • To input to policy development when policies are proposed by the Directions Team.
  • To input to the strategy process when requested by the Directions Team.
  • To comply all CAT’s policies and processes as they are amended from time to time. To read and act upon policies and processes as they are approved.
  • To be responsible for own health and safety plus that of others as defined in the job description. To report to the Health and Safety Committee any matters of concern regarding health and safety.
   Person specification Essential
  • Technical knowledge in sustainable energy technology and / or building services.
  • Interest in teaching and practical experiments on renewable energy systems.
  • The ability and willingness to administrate their own work.
  • Commitment to CAT’s aims and objectives.
  • Experience of at least 2 engineering disciplines.
  • A demonstrable interest in sustainable technologies.
  • Willingness to work evenings and/ or weekends on a duty rota or call-out basis.
  • Computer literate with experience of Microsoft packages including Excel, Word, Powerpoint, and also familiar with AutoCAD.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Good communication skills.

 

Desirable

  • Degree or above in an engineering discipline.
  • Report writing experience.
  • Welsh speaker, or willingness to learn.
  • Other practical maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of programming languages and other scientific packages for lab experiments.
