The incumbent will be responsible for providing systems engineering and systems-level analysis support to the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BeTO) within the BeTO Systems Integration (SI) function. This work will be conducted in close collaboration with DOE BeTO project and program managers, BeTO SI team members, as well as engineers, scientists, and analysts from NREL and other national laboratories.
• Systems Engineering Support 
Interface with BeTO’s Deployment and Conversion R&D Program Managers. Provide technical recommendations for Comprehensive Project Reviews, Program Peer Reviews, Stage Gate Reviews and Go/No-Go decisions, independent validation projects, and accomplishments report generation. In collaboration with the BeTO SI Lead, assist with identifying implications on BeTO strategic direction and technology area plans of issues identified in reviews. 
Lead technology validation activities to ensure that the technologies resulting from R&D and D&D projects are viable, effective and provide progress toward achieving Program goals and technical targets. 

• Systems-Level Analysis Support 
Lead the independent Systems-Level Analysis Activities in support of BeTO. Interface with the BeTO Lead Analyst and Analysis and Sustainability staff and lead, coordinate, and/or conduct systems-level analysis. Participate in and review results from techno-economic, infrastructure development, economic, and sustainability analyses. Collaborate with a biomass-to-bioenergy supply-chain modeling team in their design and analysis of bioenergy market evolution scenarios and critique the adequacy and realism of the related models and scenario analyses. 

• Participate in or lead administrative functions of the NREL Systems Engineering & Program Integration Office, including near- and long-term planning, budgeting, progress reporting, staffing, overviews/briefings, and other communication activities. 

• The employee is required to comply with all applicable Laboratory Policies, including Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements and Laboratory Computer Security procedures, and support the Laboratory EEO and Affirmative Action activities.
Relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. 

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. 

Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Apply advanced engineering technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Considered a national subject matter expert. 

Demonstrates leadership in a number of areas including all team, task and/or project lead responsibilities (works independently). Demonstrated management of complex and/or impactful projects. Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
Ten years experience in engineering, integration, or energy analysis, or equivalent relevant experience plus familiarity with DOE's energy programs and associated technical activities. Knowledge and/or expertise in the R&D and scale-up of lignocellulosic biomass conversion technologies and systems. Ability to gather and synthesize information from multiple sources and on multiple sectors and propose integrated analysis, strategies or directions. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in both one-on-one and group settings. Strong presentation, report, and white paper development skills to communicate to diverse audiences and support energy program planning and management decisions. Proven ability to work effectively across a range of complex technical topics with teams and experts with diverse backgrounds and possibly competing agendas and priorities.
Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering. Industry experience in the development of large process systems, with biorefinery experience a strong plus. Knowledge of algal biomass conversion technologies. Experience with the analysis of industrial learning and the assessment of the maturity of technical processes. Familiarity with system-dynamics modeling methodology and with interpreting the results of computer simulations, particularly supply-chain simulations. Demonstrated knowledge of software such as AspenPlus, @Risk, or Stella is a plus.
