Job/Research Summary NREL is seeking an Engineer-Programmer to support technical analysis projects in the Technical Assessment and Screening Group, Integrated Applications Center (IAC), Deployment and Market Transformation (D&MT) organization. The Center focuses on projects that involve the integrated deployment of a portfolio of renewable energy and efficiency technologies in buildings, transportation and infrastructure to meet the needs of Federal managers, international, state and local communities and governments, military bases, and campuses.

The incumbent will provide engineering and programming support to projects related to the deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies for IAC DOE and non-DOE clients. The incumbent will work under guidance of senior engineers in roles such as: developing and maintaining software tools for EE and RE analysis; analyzing data using Excel or EE/RE software tools; assisting on energy efficiency and renewable energy assessments; assisting in the measurement and verification of technology demonstration projects; and documenting project results and recommendations in reports and presentations.
Job Duties Support engineering and programming activities conducted within the Integrated Applications Center including software tool development, energy audits, renewable energy assessments, and new technology demonstrations. 

• Work as part of a software development team to develop and maintain models that analyze energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities
• Conduct engineering analysis of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects
• Evaluate technical and economic feasibility of EE and RE projects using EE and RE analysis tools such as REopt, SAM, HOMER, and RetScreen
• Conduct site assessments to evaluate EE/RE opportunities
• Measure, test, and evaluate data on technology demonstration projects
• Present engineering results in reports and presentations
• Interact with clients
Required Education and Experience Relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes General knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques.

Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes • Programming experience: fluency in at least one general purpose programming language such as C++/C#/VB.net
• Expert knowledge of MS Excel, including VBA
• Knowledge of energy efficiency or renewable energy technologies 
• Enjoys group problem solving and technical debates
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to collaborate with team members in a flexible work environment

Preferred Qualifications • Experience using EE/RE software tools such as SAM, HOMER, and RETscreen
• Experience applying engineering skills to EE and RE problems 
• Basic knowledge of economics/ finance/cash flow analysis
• Experience working with and managing large amounts of data 
• Experience using scripting languages for automating computer simulations
• Basic understanding of computational efficiency
• Basic knowledge of web programming
• Basic knowledge of GUI development
• Ability to transition easily between detailed computer modeling and big-picture client interactions
