This is a Senior Level position in the Distributed Energy Systems Integration Group. This position will focus on modeling and evaluation of electrical power systems and integration with other types of systems in a holistic approach for optimizing efficiency and reliability.
Duties would include leading and conducting research, modeling and simulation of power systems with novel configurations. This would include designing, modeling, testing of microgrids; evaluation of distributed generation (photovoltaics, wind, fuel cells, batteries, turbines, and inverters) into distribution systems, integration of command, control and other smart grid technologies into the grid. This research will also include detailed scenario analysis and project management. The work would include working with NREL key account managers, NREL line managers, and DOE on planning projects and determining technical objectives. This position would interact with funding entities (internal and external) to develop annual plans and budgets for proposed research. This position will interact with members of the technical community to stay informed about developments and communicate results. Provides reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations. Publishes results in technical journals/conference proceedings; presents work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings. Follows all Environment, Safety, and Health policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment.
Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Applies extensive engineering technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource.

Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
M.S. degree in electrical engineering or other engineering or science program and 6 years of relevant experience. Demonstrated technical knowledge of engineering practices, procedures, and techniques. Proficient at electrical system simulation programs (i.e. Matlab/SimPower Systems, Simulink, Powerworld, PSSE, PSLF, Synergee, Distributed Engineering Workstation,) or similar systems analysis programs. Ability to work well in a team or independently with limited supervision and lead team activities. Required attributes include: strong verbal, presentation, and technical writing abilities, sound interpersonal communication, creative, innovative, and adaptable.
Preferred experience with dealing with Department of Defense research and development and requirements. Preferred experience in electrical engineering with specialty in power systems and distributed energy systems. Familiarity with processing large data sets and conducting detailed analysis. Proficient at electrical system simulation programs (i.e. Powerworld, PSSE, PSLF, Synergee, Distributed Engineering Workstation, Matlab/SimPower Systems, Simulink, PSCAD). Must be proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience in developing simulation tools and conducting detailed analysis for integrating microgrids with electric power systems. Initiates innovative research in areas supporting projects. Experience in project management of basic projects. Preferred Engineer Intern (EI) or Professional Engineering (PE) License.
