Engineer – Wave Energy

Garrad Hassan is the world’s largest independent technical and engineering consultancy for renewable energy. We are the recognised global authority on onshore and offshore wind power and also serve the wave, tidal and solar sectors. The Wave Energy team currently offers a range of services which include technical due diligence, concept design, hydrodynamic modelling and site data analysis. Working as part of the Lisbon and Bristol based team, you will be required to work autonomously on a range of these activities, and your initial focus on joining will be to develop specialised software.

The successful applicant will be involved in the following:

• Development of software tools to provide loading and performance predictions for wave energy devices operating in isolation and in arrays.
• Supporting wave energy device developers in the assessment of new concepts, provision of loading and performance calculations, and analysis of measured data.
• Supporting project developers in the design and optimisation of layouts for wave energy farms.
• Technology reviews for investors
• Resource studies for policy makers and other strategic stakeholders

Requirements of the role are as follows:

Essential

• At least an upper second class (or equivalent) degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Core industrial training in hydrodynamics and fluid-structure interactions.
• Fluency in programming languages (MATLAB, Simulink).
• Good organisational skills and able to work in a busy consultancy environment.
• Ability to demonstrate adaptability and swift proficiency in new skills.
• Ability to plan and organise own workload.
• Ability to communicate concisely and effectively.
• English language report writing.
• Ability to demonstrate a motivation to move into the rapidly developing world of renewable energy.
• Driving licence.

Desirable

• Previous experience in wave energy technology development.

Given the relatively small size of the team it is expected that a successful applicant will rapidly progress and will be dealing directly with commercial clients and R&D project partners on a day-to-day basis.
