Description

This is an exciting and challenging new opportunity for an Energy Transition and Environment Lawyer to make a key contribution to ensuring that Europe’s power sector complies with applicable environmental standards and minimises its impact on public health, the environment and the climate. The lawyer will work in our EU Energy and Coal project focusing on the compliance and enforcement of existing environmental standards and regulations in the power sectors of a number of key EU jurisdictions, particularly in relation to coal.

You will be part of ClientEarth’s Strategic Litigation Programme – a vibrant and expanding team using litigation to accelerate Europe’s transition to a low carbon future. Progressive and innovative legal action has the potential to transform the EU landscape, to overcome persistent barriers to complete Europe’s internal energy market and to drive investment in sustainable alternatives.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record in environmental law, ideally with experience in compliance and enforcement of environmental law. You will be ready to apply your skills and knowledge in developing and managing cases, working with partners and lawyers, and applying practical problem solving skills. You will have outstanding thinking and communication skills and be comfortable in conveying complex ideas and working in a variety of settings.

The successful candidate will bring the ability to understand complex legal, regulatory, commercial and political terrains and a sound legal knowledge base and skill set in EU environmental law, with a preferred background in public/administrative law. Experience with EU energy law is a plus. You will be a self-starter and have the potential to identify opportunities to drive systemic change. You will be able to drive forward an agreed area of work, working in collaboration with key internal (including cross-office) and external partners. You are committed to making a contribution to the compelling and urgent need for action on climate change and more broadly to sustainable development.
