The Global Research organization within Vestas Technology R&D Americas is currently being staffed to support engineering and scientific developments within the wind technology areas of structural mechanics, electrical power system, control systems, smart grid, advanced materials and aerodynamics. In the Houston, Texas location the focus is on energy systems with particular emphasis on 100% sustainable energy-on-demand.

Vestas’ Technology R&D develops the wind power systems of the future.
Technology R&D, Global Research & Innovation, Energy Systems is looking for a Research Specialist to develop technologies promoting continued large-scale integration of wind power into the electricity supply. The newly formed department with sites in Arhus, Roskilde (Denmark), and Houston has the mission to identify and demonstrate technology to overcome challenges facing increasing shares of wind power in the electricity supply, while optimizing utilization of assets. The department consists of 25 highly skilled employees.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
The position will report to the VP, Energy Systems, and will work on national and international Vestas projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS:
  • Support smart grid initiatives by identifying proliferation challenges at fundamental level and by developing solutions with potential game-changing technologies
  • Understand the markets in remote geographical regions for micro-grid applications and create propositions for energy infrastructure development
  • Explore dynamics of wind power plant and its impact on the smart grid
  • Explore dynamics of energy storage applications and electric vehicle infrastructure and evaluate their interactions with renewable generation
  • Provide technical expertise to management on issues related to smart grid standards, requirements, trends and policies
  • Represent Vestas on industry and stakeholder group meetings
  • Work with international project teams
Responsible for bringing concepts to demonstration through the following:
  • Development of design & analysis tools; experimental HIL (hardware in the loop) verification
  • Address & create IPR (intellectual property rights)
  • Interface to joint research projects with industrial and academic partners
  • Engage in pre-standardization technical committees and standardization committees
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
  • A MSEE with a focus on Power Systems is required, PhD preferred
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum 7+ years of practical experience with power system plant concepts and solutions is required
  • Knowledgeable of the current issues of the electric transmission and distribution industry
  • An in-depth understanding of power system engineering concepts, principles, theories, regulations, standards, reliability concepts and techniques
  • Experience with model development for stability programs or grid code development will be given extra consideration
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills, excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent team skills
Preferred:
  • Knowledge of National, Regional, ISO and other planning standards
  • Knowledge of consumer side of meter issues such as demand side management
  • Knowledge of communications and IT infrastructure for smart power grid
  • Recognized as a technical expert in the power industry
  • Effective interpersonal skills, ability to develop strategic partnerships
  • Registered Professional Engineer
