The Global Research organization within Vestas Technology R&D Americas is currently being staffed to support engineering and scientific developments within the wind technology areas of structural mechanics, electrical power systems, control systems, smart grid, advanced materials and aerodynamics. In the Houston, Texas, location the focus is on energy systems with particular emphasis on 100% sustainable energy-on-demand.

Vestas’ Technology R&D develops the wind power systems of the future.
Technology R&D, Global Research & Innovation, Energy Systems is looking for a Research Specialist to develop technologies promoting continued large-scale integration of wind power into the electricity supply. The newly formed department with sites in Aarhus (Denmark), Roskilde (Denmark), and Houston has the mission to identify and demonstrate technology to overcome challenges facing increasing shares of wind power in the electricity supply, while optimizing utilization of assets. The department consists of 25 highly skilled employees.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
The position will report to the VP, Energy Systems, and will work on national and international Vestas projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS:
· Design, simulate and test software algorithms for wind power plant controls
· Create hardware prototypes and conduct controller PoC (proof of concept) testing
· Create simulation models, simulate and analyze interactions of wind power plant with ambient power grid system
· Assess energy storage media technologies, create models and evaluate dynamics of wind power plant with various supporting energy storage systems
· Communicate with international project teams
· Participate in national and international collaborative research programs
Responsible for bringing concepts to demonstration through the following:
  • Development of design & analysis tools; experimental HIL (hardware in the loop) verification
  • Identify technology challenges at fundamental level to achieve system benefits
  • Address & create IPR (intellectual property rights)
  • Interface to joint research projects with industrial and academic partners
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
  • MS in Engineering Required, PhD preferred
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· 7+ year experience in embedded control methodologies for power engineering
· Proficiency in PLC (programmable logic controller) and DSP (digital signal processor) programing
· Knowledgeable in real time control software and hardware architectures
· Demonstrated skills with hardware in the loop simulator
· Proficiency in one or more of the following modelling and simulation programs: Matlab/Simulink, PSCAD, Simplorer
· Business understanding and focus
· Good written and verbal English
Preferred:
  • Experience with technology transition in industrial R&D environments
  • Experience with plant-level wind control systems
  • Experience with energy storage modeling, simulation, and control
WORK LOCATION:
Houston, Texas; must be able to travel approximately 10%
