Energy expert with a focus on carbon finance / CDM

The background

The subjects of carbon finance, clean development mechanism and climate protection are relatively new topics in Uganda. Carbon finance, the facilitation of emission reducing projects by the purchase of emission reductions, has nevertheless taken off and has reached developing countries. Uganda is amongst the African countries with a good potential to become more involved in the production and merchandising of emission certificates – if possible, according to Kyoto mechanisms.

The Uganda Carbon Bureau (UCB) currently is the leading organization in Uganda offering consultancy for the trade with CO2 emission rights und climate protection. There are already existing projects on the voluntary emission markets and in the context of the Clean Development Mechanism. UCB wants to create a local carbon market in Uganda and to offer training as well as support for these topics. The target audiences are private businesses, governmental institutions as well as private persons. In the long run, UCB wants to create a network offering entrepreneurs initial information and support. New methods will be established to help African companies to reduce their CO2 emissions voluntarily and take part in the worldwide trade of CO2 emission rights. UCB will become a role model for Uganda’s neighbouring countries as well, and closely works with Ugandan governmental institutions, national NGOs, Ugandan universities and international development organisations. To support this initiative, UCB has asked CIM for an Integrated Expert.

 The tasks

You will support the UCB team in developing projects in carbon finance, CDM and climate change. You will develop ideas and will be responsible for the identification of new projects involving the trade in CO2 emission rights. You will be partially responsible for the work on energy relevant topics and support UCB in their networking with other relevant energy projects. You will consult local companies wanting to reduce their CO2 emissions and energy consumption. You will set standards for UCB in energy emission assessments, that conform to international best practice.

 The requirements

 You will have studied in energy or environmental sciences and will be experienced in topics such as the CDM, carbon finance, CO2 trading, bioenergy, hydroenergy or renewable energy. We are very flexible on specific knowledge and experience, and are particularly looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to join our small team. Very good written and oral English skills are needed. EU national.
