Founded in 1921, the Council on Foreign Relations is an independent, national membership organization and a nonpartisan center for scholars dedicated to producing and disseminating ideas so that individual and corporate members, as well as policymakers, journalists, students, and interested citizens in the United States and other countries, can better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other governments.  The Council, which is headquartered in New York with an office in Washington, DC, does this by: convening meetings in New York, Washington, and in other select American cities where senior government officials, global leaders, and prominent thinkers come together with Council members to debate and discuss the major foreign policy issues of our time; conducting a wide-ranging Studies Program where Council fellows produce articles and books that analyze foreign policy issues and make concrete policy recommendations; publishing Foreign Affairs, the preeminent journal covering international affairs and U.S. foreign policy; maintaining a diverse membership, including special programs to foster interest and expertise in the next generation of foreign policy leaders; sponsoring Independent Task Forces whose reports help set the public foreign policy agenda; and providing up-to-date information about the world and U.S. foreign policy on the Council's website, CFR.org.

The Intern should have an interest in international climate and energy issues. The Intern does not need prior experience in the physical sciences, but coursework in international relations would be valuable. He or she will be introduced to the international policy aspects of climate change, energy technology, and nuclear terrorism.

The main responsibilities of the interns will include (but are not limited to):

  • Aiding in preparation of three workshops: on climate change, energy security and nuclear nonproliferation
  • Assisting with basic research and administrative needs of fellow
  • Preparing for and attending meetings on climate change/energy/nuclear nonproliferation

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate student with a concentration in political science, international relations, or the sciences with high academic achievement.
  • Prior office or administrative experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work calmly in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, internet, and ability to learn new software easily.
  • Experience performing web research and proofreading.
  • Candidates should be prepared to work a minimum of 12 hours a week. Based on performance, possibility of extending internship to Winter 2010.

A modest stipend is offered upon completion of the internship.
