Application deadline: February 13, 2012

Central European University (CEU) is a graduate research-intensive university specializing primarily in the social sciences. It is located in Budapest, and accredited in the United States and Hungary. CEU’s mission is to promote academic excellence, state-of-the-art research, and civic engagement, in order to contribute to the development of open societies in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and other emerging democracies throughout the world. The teaching staff consists of more than 180 resident faculty, from over 40 countries, and a large number of prominent visiting scholars from around the world.

The language of instruction is English.

The Center for Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Policy (3CSEP) at Central European University, Budapest, is looking to hire a researcher. The researcher will contribute to the modeling of energy and GHG emission scenarios that estimate the role of the building sector in climate change mitigation.

The tasks:

To accomplish the objectives of this project existing scenarios and the underlying data will be updated and made more robust, the associated costs will be calculated, as well as a report and journal articles will be prepared. The modeling work, that is the result of many years of team effort, shows the trends of energy use dynamics in global and regional building sectors and building types. The model will help determine the potential for energy use and GHG emissions reduction connected to ambitious and worldwide proliferation of energy efficient and renewable energy best-practices in buildings. An important element of the present work is to estimate the financial implications of the advanced scenarios and their cost-effectiveness. The scenarios are based on the CEU 3CSEP’s earlier building energy scenario work for the IPCC, the Global Energy Assessment and the UNEP SBCI.

The applicant:

We are looking for applicants with a background in engineering, economics or related subjects, with strong quantitative skills and good knowledge of Excel. Experience in (engineering-economic) modeling, scenario development, or programming skills are a strong asset. Good writing skills in English are a prerequisite, as is the ability to meet tight deadlines. The researcher will be based in Budapest.

Compensation:

The work will begin immediately and continue until June 2012. Compensation is based on the experience, skills and availability of the applicant.
