The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit whose scientists and engineers work to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. UCS combines technical analysis and effective organizing and advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for stemming the tide of global warming, sustainable food policy and agriculture, energy and transportation, fighting misinformation and reducing the threat of catastrophic nuclear war.

The Energy Modeler will conduct analysis and modeling of renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate policies at the state, regional and national level. The analyst will work with a multi-disciplinary team in our Climate and Energy Program to advance effective and equitable clean energy and climate policies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct modeling and spreadsheet analyses of proposed renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate, and carbon market trading policies and programs at the state, regional, and national level.
  • Conceptualize and design modeling scenarios with input from the energy team.
  • Quantify energy, economic, environmental, public health, and equity impacts of proposed policies.
  • Assist UCS staff in reviewing, developing, and testing model assumptions. Maintain and update energy and electricity sector models on a regular basis. Review research from other organizations and government agencies. Assist in writing reports, papers, and fact sheets highlighting the results of analyses.
  • Prepare and deliver public presentations of modeling results and reports at conferences and meetings.

Qualifications and experience

Strong quantitative, analytical, mathematical and research skills are required. A Master’s Degree or higher that has a significant quantitative modeling component required. Knowledge of economy-wide energy and electricity sector models, and their application for analyzing renewable energy, efficiency, and electricity technologies, markets, and policies is required.Familiarity with energy efficiency technologies, policies, costs, and benefits is helpful.

Position requires at least 3 to 5 years of comparable and relevant experience using energy and electricity sector models, with more experience preferred. Familiarity with and experience using the Energy Information Administration’s National Energy Modeling System, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Regional Energy Deployment System and other electricity capacity expansion models is highly desirable.

Computer programming experience and skills are also required, with knowledge of Fortran, GAMS, or R preferred. Experience with ArcGIS is also desirable.

May spend extended periods at computer terminal.  May require occasional overnight travel, about 5-10 days per year.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time position based in UCS’s Cambridge, MA office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $68,000. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
