The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to secure an energy future that is both environmentally and economically sustainable. With locations in Golden, Boulder and Washington D.C., NREL is the primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy technologies in the United States. The NREL mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering, and transfer knowledge and innovation to address the nation’s energy and environmental goals.
NREL’s Strategic Energy Analysis Center has an immediate opening for a graduate student intern to assist NREL scientists in evaluating water management tradeoffs in the electricity sector as well as in unconventional oil and gas development. 

This position is for the Spring 2015 semester with the possibility of continuing longer. It is located in our Golden, Colorado office. The position would be part-time (20 - 30 hours per week) during the school year and, if continuing, part or full time during summer. One-time, round trip relocation expenses for transportation might be available depending on eligibility (for a successful candidate residing more than 50 miles from NREL work site).
The intern will join a team of researchers who analyze vulnerabilities and tradeoffs of the energy sector in relation to water resource availability and water resource management practices. Specific projects include efforts to characterize previous historical power plant vulnerabilities associated with water temperature and water availability and unconventional oil and gas water management. Duties include data collection, database management, analysis of results, and summarizing findings. Communication with project sponsors and industry partners is also expected. Authorship of reports or subsequent papers is possible depending on depth of contribution. This project will last through the Spring 2015 semester, or longer is possible depending on interest and performance.
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. 

Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. 

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

-Minimum 3.0 GPA for most recently completed semester 
-Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and Power Point (or equivalent) software 
-Excellent organizational and communication skills and data documentation practices
-Master’s or doctoral degree student, preferably in engineering or another technical discipline or with strong technical background/knowledge/skills/experience 
-Experience with electricity sector analysis 
-Experience with water resource analysis 
-Experience with oil and gas operations 
-Excellent skills in visual presentation of quantitative information
