The role

The Energy Modeling Program, based in Somerville, Massachusetts, develops quantitative modeling tools and techniques and conducts modeling and policy support projects worldwide. This work centers on modeling energy systems but includes analyses of greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, the water-energy-food nexus, macroeconomic systems, and Sustainable Development Goals. The Program emphasizes projects in low and middle-income countries but also carries out assignments in the US and Europe.

Much of the Energy Modeling Program’s work involves developing, supporting and applying SEI’s LEAP (Low Emissions Analysis Platform) and NEMO (Next Energy Modeling system for Optimization) software. As a member of the team, you would be expected to work with LEAP and NEMO and to help others around the world use these tools.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and apply models of energy and economic systems, energy technologies, climate change mitigation measures, and other sustainable-development-related policy interventions. Our current projects are particularly focused on electricity-sector modeling.
  • Plan and implement innovative research projects that use quantitative modeling and analysis to inform energy, climate, and development policy.
  • Research modeling tools and methods and help develop SEI’s modeling toolkit.
  • Collaborate with and support researchers and policy makers using LEAP and NEMO and help enhance their technical and analytical capacity.
  • Travel internationally as needed (expected 4-6 times per year once COVID-19 has receded).
  • Produce, review, and edit technical reports, academic papers, briefs, and presentations on modeling and policy research.
  • Maintain and build relationships with existing funders and partners and develop new funding opportunities.
  • Explore joint research opportunities and collaborate with colleagues at SEI US and other SEI centres.
  • Raise the profile of SEI’s research by presenting, publishing, and communicating externally.

Who you are

You should have a keen interest in sustainability research, capacity building, and using your technical skills to help understand the major environmental and sustainability challenges the world is facing in the twenty-first century. You will work as part of a team in a flexible and exciting research environment.

Required qualifications and experience

The successful applicant will have:

  • Significant experience working with energy and environmental models such as LEAP, TIMES/MARKAL, OSeMOSYS, MESSAGE, or similar.
  • An advanced degree in a related field (preferably Ph.D.).
  • Expertise in energy and environmental policy, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills (for both technical and non-technical audiences) and a record of publishing and presenting research results in academic, policy, or other fora.
  • Demonstrated task management capabilities.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Proven success working with a range of partners, such as research institutes, governments, and other nonprofit organizations.
  • Strong leadership, technical, communications, interpersonal, and networking skills.

Desirable qualifications

  • Expertise with optimization, system dynamics, agent-based, macroeconomic, or similar modeling techniques.
  • Proficiency in one or more languages other than English (French, Spanish, and Russian highly desirable).
  • Experience with computer programming to build or facilitate building quantitative models and/or web sites.
  • A record of developing and securing funding for new research projects.
  • Project management experience.
  • Work experience in developing countries.

Applications should be written in English. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Benefits

SEI US offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and disability insurance; retirement; and paid parental and family medical leave after one year of employment. We have a welcoming work environment and flexible work schedules, and offer 10 holidays, 15 days of vacation (increasing to 20 days after five years of employment), and 10 days of sick leave each year.
