Job Title/Grade: Energy and Environment Officer
Reporting to: Energy and Environment Manager
Purpose of the post:
To act as the University’s focal point for leading student and staff engagement programmes, organising behaviour change projects and co-ordinating and promoting environmental initiatives within the university. The post holder will be required to lead on the development and implementation of the Energy and Environmental Management Systems.
The post holder is required to assist the Energy and Environment Manager in all aspects of their duties, in respect of the University’s physical environment through Energy and Environmental Management.
The post holder will act as the Group Secretary for the University’s Sustainable Development Group and will be expected to prepare KPI reports for the Sustainability & Energy Group and other appropriate forums.
The reduction in CO2 emissions and energy consumption is a fundamental element of this role. The post holder will facilitate implementation of carbon reduction projects, work closely with trainee maintenance engineers to identify energy savings projects, prepare energy projects implementation business case and prepare monthly KPI reports.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The main duties and responsibilities include:
To develop and implement the University’s Energy and Environmental Management System.
To draw up an implementation strategy for the University’s Environmental Management System setting out clear targets, monitoring progress year on year. These activities may include taking the lead on individual actions and initiatives or may consist of providing relevant advice to those responsible for initiating projects.
Be innovative and imaginative to promote positive environmental behaviour within staff and students. Manage awareness raising campaigns, hold regular events and be a focal point for engagement at LSBU
Improve the student experience by offering training, guidance and support
To identify improvement actions and produce business plans and feasibility studies, demonstrating the efficiency of particular initiatives for approval. Where approved, to manage projects to completion and monitor and report on outcomes, all with the assistance of the Maintenance Engineers and Project Managers.
To take a key role in leading agreed initiatives for carbon reduction and environmental improvement across campus including the promotion of carbon management and energy reduction activities across campus, seeking the support of academic and non-academic departments and the Student Union as appropriate.
To support the University’s Sustainable Development Group and other groups with an environmental focus and support Group Secretary by taking minutes.
To maintain utilities consumption records on campus, including gas, electricity, and water and monitor consumption against targets to prepare reports and analyse energy performance
To identify appropriate external standards, awards and benchmarks for adoption by the University, and to develop performance reports.
- To maintain an awareness of
environmental law and to provide advice on compliance across all relevant activities. Maintain contact with energy efficiency agencies and professional bodies to keep up to date with current best practice and technologies. Pursue a personal programme of Continuing Professional (technical/management) Development
- To Support all work
undertaken by the Energy and Environment Manager.
- Any further duties that may
reasonably be required from time to time commensurate with the grade of this position.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Educated to Degree level in a relevant subject such as Environmental Management and/or Policy.
Hold a relevant professional body qualification in Energy Management and Auditing.
Member or working towards membership of a suitable professional body such as IEMA or IES.
Have experience in developing energy and environmental strategies and engagement initiatives in a University Estates context, and the management of environmental programmes. Ideally have an understanding of the role of environmental improvement within the higher education sector.
Have experience of working with volunteers and engaging students in environmental initiatives.
Ability to demonstrate an understanding of ISO 14001 and EN 16001 within a Higher Education Institute.
Demonstrate enthusiasm and innovation for the promotion of energy conservation and environmental improvement. Capability to communicate this to a wide range of stakeholders and to gather support from colleagues and stakeholders across a range of disciplines
Ability to persuade, liaise and interact effectively with all groups and present complex ideas clearly and effectively.
A strong champion of environmental best practice while still working within an overall team ethos
Demonstrable project management skills/qualifications
Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and work outside of normal contractual hours to achieve these if needed.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Able to demonstrate an understanding of equality and diversity, and its practical application.
