Energy & Climate Economist

The Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI, www.epri.com) conducts research and development relating to the generation, delivery, and use of electricity for the benefit of the public. An independent, nonprofit organization, EPRI brings together its scientists and engineers as well as experts from academia and industry to help address challenges in electricity, including reliability, efficiency, health, safety and the environment.

EPRI is seeking one or more Economists in its Energy and Climate Analysis Program who will be responsible for conducting and supporting economic and technology modeling analyses of energy and environmental policy options, particularly in the U.S. electric sector. Most time will be spent developing and running large-scale optimization and computable general equilibrium models and interpreting and communicating results and insights. Job locations are Washington, DC or Palo Alto, CA.

Job Functions:
• Apply economic principles, methods, and practices to develop “state of the art” energy-economic models for gaining insights into the impacts of energy, environmental, and climate policies on the electric power sector and U.S. economy, with particular emphasis on the role of new technologies.
• Provide expert analysis on policy, technological, economic, and other issues related to reducing greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions in the U.S.
• Anticipate, develop, and manage new business opportunities for EPRI in the area of Climate and Energy Analysis, particularly with respect to the economic analysis of emerging policy proposals.
• Provide support to specific member companies in addressing energy and environmental policy-related aspects of their business operations.
• Enhance coordination of EPRI’s research program with similar activities being developed by various offices and laboratories within the Federal agencies of the U.S. Government, State-funded research programs, and other energy research and non-governmental organizations.
• Contribute to the leadership of EPRI’s research program by defining issues and products, establishing teams of scientists and engineers in academia and industry to solve identified issues, and delivering results within allocated schedule and resources.

Ideal Candidate:
• Advanced degree (minimum MA; PhD preferred) in Economics, Operations Research, or a related discipline, with significant exposure to environmental and energy economics and public policy.
• 3-5 years relevant and distinguished experience in operations research, economic modeling, or energy and environmental policy analysis; or equivalent;
• Experience with high-level modeling systems for mathematical programming, optimization, and economics (e.g., GAMS).
• Familiarity with international, Federal, and State energy, environmental, and climate policy initiatives.
• Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with multidisciplinary staff, contracted resources, and the scientific and technical community at large to collect and assess information on new, innovative technical opportunities
• Excellent oral, written communication, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate research issues, approaches, and findings with non-specialists as well as with scientists, engineers, and utility executives.
