Endangered Species Act Campaigner
Full Time
Portland, Oregon

General position overview:
The Center for Biological Diversity — a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of imperiled plants, animals and wild places — seeks an experienced campaigner to engage the Center’s more than 625,000 members and online activists, the public at large, other environmental groups, scientists, community leaders, elected officials and others in defense of the Endangered Species Act. The campaigner will report to the Endangered Species Program Director and work collaboratively with other conservation and communications staff.

Main duties:

  • Generate research reports, press releases, Web text, action alerts and other materials to highlight the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act and defend it against attacks.
  • Generate favorable news articles and TV and radio stories on the success and importance of the Act.
  • Engage the public, through action alerts and other tools, to ensure that political leaders hear constituent voices in support of the Act and endangered species protections.
  • Cultivate and expand the Center’s network of volunteer ESActivists.
  • Generate favorable editorials, op-eds and letters to the editor in support of the Act.
  • Draft comments and take other actions in support of endangered species protections for individual species.
  • Engage environmental groups, religious organizations, hunting and fishing groups, and others to join our campaign.

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills desired:

  • Dynamic and assertive personality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to produce well-written communications on short- and long-range deadlines.
  • Experience conducting environmental advocacy highly desirable.
  • Experience working with volunteers and/or activists, as well as the media.
  • A passion for and knowledge of the natural world, biodiversity and the Endangered Species Act.
  • An advanced degree in science or law.
  • Experience conducting research, including database work, highly desirable.
