Employee Relations Specialist (DC/SF)

Washington, DC or San Francisco, CA

 
As this is a new role, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to join our organization and participate in the development of the role in addition to the growth of our Employee Relations function. Under the direction of the Director of Human Resources for Greenpeace USA, the selected candidate will play an integral role in driving innovation, cultivating insights, and building unique solutions for our organization. This position will also be the central point of contact for employee related issues and concerns, providing employees with a fair and unbiased process to raise and resolve issues. The position will provide guidance and consultation on managing performance and behavior, mediating conflict in the workplace, investigating and resolving complaints, applying and interpreting company policies and maintaining a positive relationship with our dedicated employees through the maintenance of an inclusive and fair work environment. Finally, the position will help ensure company policies, procedures and training efforts support a positive work environment free from harassment and discrimination.

Essential Functions:

 1.      Evaluate, monitor, recommend, and execute the organization’s employee relations function and performance.

  • Assist in the design and administration of HR policies and procedures
  • Manage ER efforts to ensure that employment related information, processes, and procedures meet internal and external audit requirements.
  • Develop and recommend core HR training programs for managers and supervisors.
  • Resolve employee complaints.
  • Participate in the administration of organizational programs including the Employee Engagement Survey and de-brief meetings.
  • Analyze audits and other assessments to identify trends, recommend direction, and provide guidance needed to adjust unfavorable trends and meet the needs of the organization.
  • Conduct internal, off site investigations as needed.

 2.     Provide advice and counsel to management on employee relations matters, leaves of absence, and disciplinary issues.

  •  Ensure compliance with federal/state laws and consistent application of company policies and procedures.
  • Advise management on needed actions.
  • Maintain knowledge of US and international HR policies, programs, laws, and issues.
  • Promote a high level of employee morale and motivation.
  • Establish credibility throughout the organization with management and employees through creative problem solving and coaching.
  • Partner with human resources and Legal leadership to design, cascade and promote standardized processes, templates, tools and/or technologies for use in managing employee relations activities, corrective action administration and escalated issue resolution protocols.

3.     Collaborate with management and talent acquisition team on succession planning or other staffing strategies, plans, and programs to identify, recruit, and retain diverse talent within and outside of the organization.
  • On-board, mentor, and support members of management.
     Knowledge & Skills

         Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Organizational Development or related field.

 Experience:

  • 5-7 years of relevant HR and/or training experience
  • Non-profit experience a plus

 Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong employee relations, problem solving, written and oral communication, interview, presentation and facilitation skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage multiple concurrent and complex projects.
  • Demonstrated analytical and decision making skills including data gathering and analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to address large groups of individuals and effectively deliver training and policy initiatives.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and personal accountability
