Description

The European Environmental Bureau is recruiting for two Emissions Database Assistants

The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) is looking to recruit two Emissions Database Assistants to work closely with colleagues in the Industrial Production team. We are looking for two highly motivated self-starters, eager to learn and contribute to the EEB’s work. We offer two 4-month paid internship contracts (convention d’immersion professionnelle) based in the EEB office in Brussels.

Large Combustion Plants (LCPs) running on fossil fuels are responsible for a significant proportion of anthropogenic pollutant emissions. Coal plants alone are the largest source of sulphur dioxide and mercury emissions in Europe and one of the largest industrial sources of emissions of nitrogen oxides, arsenic, lead and cadmium. Air pollution from the EU’s coal-fired power stations caused an estimated 22,300 premature deaths in 2010, as well as exacerbating asthma and contributing to dangerous levels of mercury found in the blood of thousands of babies born in Europe.

The operating permits and compliance/inspection reports of these plants are currently difficult to find in many EU countries (see the EEB’s 2017 report “Burning: The Evidence”). The EEB is setting up a database that would enhance transparency and expose infringements.

More specifically, the intern(s) will:

  • Learn the basics of the legal status of LCPs in EU legislation
  • Get familiar with reporting practises in different EU member states
  • Retrieving, interpreting and documenting LCPs permits, compliance and inspection reports from specific EU MSs, and thereby populating (not creating) the database

Qualities and experiences required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in environmental or natural sciences or engineering
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Good knowledge of at least one of the following languages: Polish, Czech, Slovak, Romanian, German, Spanish. Languages such as Slovenian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian and Finnish are considered a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and be pro-active
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Flexibility (we expect and offer flexibility regarding work schedules)
  • Prepared and able to work in a dynamic working environment
  • Interest / Experience in working in an environmental organisation or other public interest NGO and in an international working environment

The EEB offers:

  • A 4-month contract - “convention d’immersion professionnelle” paid internship around 1000€ net/month with the opportunity to learn more about functioning of a non-governmental organisation
  • A stimulating, international work environment.
  • An opportunity to work for a worthy cause.

Application process:

Please email your application in English to personnel@eeb.org including a CV and cover letter explaining how your education and experience are relevant to the position. Please confirm that you have not been employed on a convention d’immersion professionnelle (CIP) contract in the past and that you are not enrolled in a university.

Place:                                          EEB office in Brussels

Deadline for Application:             Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with the deadline to apply 16 August 2019

Proposed starting date:                As soon as possible

The EEB is an equal-opportunities employer.

Due to limited staff resources and numbers of CVs anticipated, only candidates selected for interviews will receive a reply.
