With locations in Golden, Boulder and Washington D.C., NREL is the primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy technologies in the United States. The NREL mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering, and transfer knowledge and innovation to address the nation’s energy and environmental goals.
As a member of the Transportation and Hydrogen Systems Center, integrate the operation of electric vehicles with building and grid operations through collaboration with academic and industry partners creating value and opportunity. Components within the system to be researched and developed include electric vehicles, batteries, communications infrastructure, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, building energy management and grid operations. This focus will be on the vehicle-relevant aspects of the future smart grid system. The researcher will conduct data analysis, model development, laboratory experiments, and presentation of complex system conclusions. Dissemination of the research results will be shared with industry, technical, and Department of Energy audiences.
Systems development and testing: Research state-of-the-art smart grid and smart vehicle systems to guide system laboratory testing plans. Conduct bench tests of communications, vehicle energy storage, and power conversion electronics up to 480V AC 3-phase and 600V DC. Where systems are currently not available, some technology development and prototyping will be necessary. Collaborate with component suppliers on testing plans and review of results.

Results analysis: Use internal and external data resources to develop opportunity scenarios for vehicle grid integration technology. Research should both highlight value and challenges remaining to be addressed. Highlight research direction needs.

Test facility operations: Work with managers to ensure testing facilities at the Vehicle Testing and Integration Facility and the Energy Systems Integration Facility are prepared to accommodate the needs of DOE and industry technology tests leading to vehicle grid integration technology adoption. Address necessary safety protocols for Environmental, Safety and Health approvals.

Information Dissemination: Author technical papers on results of technology development and testing. Work with NREL, DOE and other national laboratories to utilize data obtained from research experiments to guide future work plans. Leverage NREL publication resources to share data and results with industry. Develop content for presentations on results at relevant conferences or workshops.
