Advanced level EHS Point of Contact position that provides direct Health and Safety technical expertise and support to research and support organizations. Plan, coordinate and provide a wide variety of EHS point of contact services. Functional assignments will be primarily in areas of occupational safety.
Provide support as an EHS Office Point of Contact (POC) for assigned Research and Development (R&D) and support organizations: 
- Regularly and directly interact with researchers, industrial partners, subcontractors, support personnel, line management and DOE. 
- Review plans for future research projects and participate in risk assessment activities including hazard analysis, Safe Work Permit and Safe Operating Procedure development, conduct Readiness Verifications and participate in safety inspections.
- Perform office and industrial ergonomic evaluations. 
- Respond to staff inquiries and requests for assistance on EHS matters.
- Assist in resolution of EHS concerns and problems.
- Complete code compliance reviews.

Serve as POC for facility related EHS issues which may include EHS support for construction, fire and life safety, and maintenance activities.

Support the development, implementation and administration of EHS Programs and procedures within defined areas of responsibility.

Assist in the maintenance and presentation of specific EHS training programs such as new employee orientation, fall protection, hoisting and rigging, lockout tagout, confined space, emergency response, powered industrial trucks, and chemical safety. 

Perform special project technical work, individually and as a team member.

Support or lead accident/incident investigation and root cause analysis as needed. Follow-up on corrective action implementation.

Act as a member of the NREL Emergency Response Team for low to moderate spill response. Responsibilities include: participating in drills, classroom training, wearing SCBA, maintenance of required certifications and actual emergency response.

Participate on safety panels and safety subcommittees within areas of expertise.

Act as a backup to other EHS POCs.
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques and standards. Considered internal subject matter expert.

Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
Comfortable working at heights and with the use of fall protection equipment.

Ability to perform site work that can involve extreme weather conditions and moderate physical exertion.

40-hour HAZWOPER training

Ability to walk one mile continuously, ability to stand continuously for two hours, ability to lift and carry 45 pounds.

Experience and proven capabilities in occupational safety.

Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills. Ability to establish and sustain collaborative and productive working relationships.

Excellent technical writing skills.
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).

Experience working in a research and development environment, such as a university or laboratory.

Experience and proven capabilities in occupational safety areas such as hoisting and rigging, fall protection, lockout tagout, electrical safety, powered industrial trucks, aerial lifts. Training and hands-on experience with these aspects preferred. 

Experience working at a Department of Energy site is preferred, but not required.

Excellent understanding of DOE and OSHA regulations.

Demonstrated abilities in programmatic planning, organization, improvement and execution. 

Familiarity with 10CFR851 DOE Worker Safety and Health and Integrated Safety Management Systems. 

Innovative and creative thinking.

Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to perform independently. 

Ability to travel on occasion.

Proficient computer skills, including MS Office Suite, email and ability to quickly learn database software applications such as FileMaker.

Ability and willingness to wear respiratory protection, including full-face respirator.

Ability and willingness to occasionally use a full face respirator with SCBA.
