Description

Education Communication Internship with BGCI
Internship title: Education Communication officer/assistant
Organisation: BGCI Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
Start Date: February 2013
Duration: 3-6 months
Location: Kew, London

Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is the largest plant conservation network in the world.  Our aim is to raise awareness of the importance of plants in supporting human-well-being and to ensure that no plant becomes extinct.  Based in Kew, London, we work with member botanic gardens in more than 115 countries.  From grassroots action to shaping government policies and priorities, we utilise our international network and expertise to achieve real conservation success.

We are looking for an excellent communicator to help us promote BGCI’s education work to our members and as wide an audience as possible. This will involve developing the BGCI’s education centre (www.bgci.org/education) through sourcing news stories, creating web pages, disseminating information about project activities and developing our capacity to communicate more effectively through social media.  We also need support with our biannual publication, Roots. Hours will be: 9.00-5.00 Mon-Fri (including 1 hour for lunch).

Internship Requirements include:

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or Postgraduate degree (or studying towards a Postgraduate degree) in Science communication, environmental/science/museum education, media and communication.

Knowledge/skills/other attributes

  • Enthusiasm and competency in using social media
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office, Internet explorer
  • Excellent English writing skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience in using Content Management Systems
  • Good knowledge of a second language (Spanish, French) will be an advantage
  • Interest in environmental/plants conservation and education

This is the perfect opportunity for someone to be part of and contribute to the education work of a charitable organisation. Not only you will get involved in a variety of projects/activities run by the education team but you will be actively involved in disseminating information and reaching a variety of international audiences. We offer a friendly and busy environment that will enable you to find out about the world of botanic gardens’ and other museums’ education and develop contacts for future job opportunities. As part of the internship you will receive training in BGCI’s CMS and will obtain valuable work experience in using social media for promoting the work of BGCI’s education department.

If you have what it takes to be an intern at BGCI we want to hear from you.  Please send your C.V. plus a covering letter outlining how your knowledge, skills and experience can help us communicate more effectively.

Please send your application by email to julia.willison@bgci.org quoting ‘Education Intern’ in the subject line.
