Background to the International Year of Biodiversity The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by UNEP. Responsibilities: Under the overall guidance of the Executive Secretary, and the direct supervision of the Editor, the incumbent will: - Revise and format texts submitted for distribution as official and ensure correct style, grammar, terminology, spelling, etc. Ensure concordance between translations and original texts. Check accuracy of references, dates, figures, calculations and consistency in terminology. Consult originators, language and terminology officers as necessary. As necessary, mark up copy and plan layouts of Secretariat publications for artwork and typographical composition; - Finalize official documents on the basis of mark ups prepared by the Editor or other Secretariat Staff; - Organize and maintain an electronic library of official documents. Assist in coordinating the conversion and dissemination of publications in other electronic formats, if required, e.g. in a web-based format or CDROM, etc; - Monitor the flow of documentation through the editorial, translation and distribution processes. Maintain records of document flow; - Establish and maintain a database of SCBD terminology and reference sources; SCBD Terms of Reference 2 - Keep up to date with United Nations editorial guidelines and keep abreast with the latest office software, particularly with respect to the design and introduction of innovations to improve the speed and accuracy of the editing process; - Generally assist in the work of the Editor and perform other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Work Experience: Must have a minimum of 4 years experience in editorial services/communication/journalism. Basic understanding of the international context and the work of the CBD Education: Courses in Journalism, environmental sciences, business administration, or biodiversity-related fields. Languages: English a requirement. French and Spanish Language an asset Other Skills: Excellent coordination skills, and an ability to follow instructions, work under pressure as a part of a team, or independently; must have excellent drafting skills, reading skills, editing knowledge; must have strong organizational skills & ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines is essential Remuneration: The Gross Salary for this position is CAD $47,343 per annum and Net Salary of CAD $37,214 per annum Special Information: Appointment against this post is on a local basis. External candidates will be considered only when no suitable internal candidate from the duty station is identified. If an external candidate is selected, his/her appointment will be subject to a passing grade on the relevant entry-level examination at the duty station.
