NIWA is New Zealand's leading environmental research institute, providing research and applied science services to a vast array of public and private sector clients. NIWA's fields of science stretch from the bottom of the sea to the top of the atmosphere.

We have an excellent opportunity for an outstanding communications professional to take ownership of NIWA's flagship magazine, Water & Atmosphere.

Water & Atmosphere is an intelligent magazine for busy people at the top of their fields in business and government. Our articles explore what science can add to the big environmental debates of the day, and of course we showcase fascinating science for its own sake.

We have the science talent, fascinating research, and stunning imagery. What we need is a savvy, dynamic Editor to drive and shape an innovative publication.

Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Editor will work closely with senior scientists and communications colleagues, to secure delivery of accurate and engaging articles from professional writers and scientists. Previous science experience is not necessary, but you must have a demonstrated ability to translate complex concepts into lay language.

This position is half-time (0.5FTE), to be worked flexibly over the course of the production cycle.

Our successful applicant will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience
  • Extensive experience in publications and editing, including budget and contractor management
  • Highly developed communication skills
  • Detail orientation and high levels of accuracy
