Description

About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Overview:

The EDGE of Existence Programme at the Zoological Society of London is offering an excellent opportunity to gain experience with one of the UK’s leading conservation research organisations, helping us to raise awareness of some of the most unique and threatened species on our planet.

The EDGE of Existence programme is the only global conservation initiative to focus specifically on threatened species that represent a significant amount of unique evolutionary history. Using a scientific framework to identify the world’s most Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species, the EDGE of Existence programme highlights and protects some of the most unique and most wonderful species on the planet. EDGE species have few or no close relatives on the tree of life, and are usually extremely distinct in the way they look, live and behave – as well as in their genetic make-up. Frequently overlooked by the conservation agenda, when they are gone, there will be nothing like them left on Earth.

Role Profile:

The aim of the EDGE programme is to put these species on the map and catalyse conservation action to secure their future. This internship will assist the EDGE team in updating and maintaining public information on our species and projects primarily through our website at edgeofexistence.org, encouraging people to get involved in the EDGE community and on social media.

Person Specification:

Candidates would ideally have some knowledge and interest in conservation or a related subject, good communication skills, experience in updating and managing website content, and excellent attention to detail. Finally, potential volunteers must be eligible to work in the UK.

The volunteering opportunity is for three  to six months, starting in May 2016. The role is ideally for three/four days a week, following normal office hours from 9.30am to 5.30pm and is based within ZSL’s Conservation Programmes department in Regent’s Park, London.

Please note that this is a voluntary position. However, lunch (up to £5) and travel expenses (equivalent to a monthly travel card within zones 1-6) will be reimbursed.

In this role, the voluntary intern will benefit from training in how to update content on the website and blog, in scientific writing, and on the use of social media to communicate science. Also, they will have the opportunity to network with researchers within and outside ZSL. Additional learning and networking opportunities are available through weekly seminars, meetings and conservation and research talks across ZSL.

To Apply:

Applicants will need to upload their CV and covering letter (detailing relevant experience and skills, stating why they would like to take up the role including details of availability) and can do this by clicking the "Apply for this role online” button. If you have any queries regarding this position or when applying through the system please contact Human Resources at hr@zsl.org.

Closing date for applications: Midnight Monday 2nd May 2016.

Interviews will be held Friday 6th May 2016.
