This position has currently identified financial support from August 1st, 2011 through June 30th, 2012, and no guarantees can be made that the position will extend beyond that date. The Nature Conservancy is an employer at will and the employment relationship may end at any time.

  • Participate as a fire team crew member on prescribed burns conducted by The Nature Conservancy and various federal/state agencies on both preserves and partner lands. Perform various prescribed fire and wildfire duties, if qualified, including ignition, holding, mop-up, engine operation, and gathering fire weather data.
  • Participate as a fire team crew member on wildfires if requested. Ability to function productively as a member of a work team.
  • Excellent physical condition. Ability to meet minimum TNC training and health requirements for wildland fires at the arduous level.  For Florida: 3 mile walk with a 45 pound pack test with a time of 45 minutes or less. Must meet NWCG 310-1 training requirements for Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2).  Willingness to work outdoors in hot weather.
  • Operate fire equipment, if qualified, including ignition devices, 4 WD trucks, ATV’s, UTV’s, portable pumps, pump engines, port-a-tanks, tractors, backpack blowers, brushcutters, chain saws, hand tools, and GPS units. Must be able to safely operate an All-terrain Vehicle (ATV) or Utility All-Terrain Vehicle (UTV) when duties require use of such equipment and to comply with Florida Chapter All-terrain Vehicle Operating Guidelines at all times. Must have a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
  • Perform fire preparations, including tractor mowing, tree cutting, chain saw work, raking, boundary delineation, etc.  Must have familiarity with the safe operation of equipment, and must follow recommended safety guidelines and precautions specified for said work.
  • GIS experience a plus. 
  • Treat invasive plant species using herbicides such as Garlon 4, RoundUp Pro, Imazypyr, etc.. Willingness to pass Florida Pesticide Applicators test.
  • Perform fire related and other biological monitoring.Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.  Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete management activities.
  • Will participate in various management and maintenance activities (e.g. facility upkeep, fence construction, hardwood removal, trail maintenance, groundcover restoration, tree planting, and invasive/exotic species control using herbicides).
  • Maintain equipment and fire cache in fire-ready status; maintain clean and organized trucks and work areas.
  • Maintain personal appearance in professional, presentable fashion, suitable to represent The Nature Conservancy to agencies and the public.
  • Good interpersonal skills.  Ability to maintain positive morale under adverse working conditions.  Ability to get along in a group setting.
  • Must work a minimum of 35 hours per week.Willingness to work in both hot and cold weather.
  • Common sense, ability to work with equipment, and good safety record.  Previous First Aid training a plus.
  • Ability to complete tasks within assigned timeframes, frequently in the absence of supervision.
  • Willingness to maintain detailed and accurate work records using Excel or other database programs.
  • Willingness to work in a large geographical area, maintain a flexible work schedule, and work long hours in close contact with work mates and partners of varying backgrounds and dispositions.
