The Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI, www.epri.com) conducts research and development relating to the generation, delivery and use of electricity for the benefit of the public. An independent, nonprofit organization, EPRI brings together its scientists and engineers as well as experts from academia and industry to help address challenges in electricity, including reliability, efficiency, health, safety and the environment.

Location - Washington, D.C. or Palo Alto, CA

The Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI, www.epri.com) is seeking one or more Economists – Global Climate who will be responsible for conducting and supporting economic and technology analyses of energy and environmental policy options, particularly on the U.S. energy sector.  Most time will be spent developing and running large scale and computable general equilibrium models.

EPRI has embarked on a significant new economic model development effort intended to advance the “state of the art” with respect to modeling of regional economic responses to energy and climate policies.  Candidates for these interdisciplinary positions are needed to drive this effort forward, particularly individuals with a demonstrated record for conducting and publishing high-quality research, and who can anticipate future needs, develop solutions and lead cutting edge research to achieve the desired goals. 


Job Functions:

  • Apply economic principles, methods, and practices to develop “state of the art” energy-economic models for assessing the impacts of energy and climate measures on the U.S. economy, in general, and the electric power sector, in particular. 
  • Provide expert analysis on policy, technological, economic, and other issues related to reducing greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions in the U.S.
  • Work with EPRI’s other business sectors (Nuclear, Power Delivery and Utilization, Generation) and other Environment programs to ensure that new learning from projects and programs conducted by those groups is incorporated into the analytical tools and models used by EPRI’s Global Climate group.
  • Anticipate, develop and manage new business opportunities for EPRI in the area of global climate change, particularly with respect to the economic analysis of specific mitigation and/or adaptation measures.
  • Provide support to specific member companies in addressing energy and environmental policy-related aspects of their business operations.
  • Provide integration of EPRI’s research program with similar activities being developed by various offices and laboratories within the Federal agencies of the U.S. Government, State-funded research programs, and other energy research and non-governmental organizations.
  • Contribute to the leadership of a national research program by defining issues and products, establishing teams of scientists and engineers in academia and industry to solve identified issues, and delivering results within allocated schedule and resources.

 

Ideal Candidate:

 

 

  • Advanced degree (minimum MA; PhD preferred) in Economics or a related discipline, with significant exposure to environmental and energy economics, and public policy. 
  • 3-5 years relevant and distinguished experience in operations research, economic modeling, or energy and environmental policy analysis; or equivalent;   
  • Experience with high-level modeling systems for mathematical programming, optimization, and economics (e.g., GAMS).  
  • Quantitative understanding of mathematical economics, econometrics, and statistics 
  • Familiarity with international, Federal, and State energy and climate policy initiatives
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with multidisciplinary staff, contracted resources, and the scientific and technical community at large to collect and assess information on new, innovative technical opportunities
  • Excellent oral, written communication, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate research issues, approaches, and findings with non-specialists as well as with scientists, engineers, and utility executives
