Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Sustainable Energy Issues Team Leader and the general supervision of the Chief of the Sustainable Development and Productivity Division, the Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for carrying out the following tasks pertaining to energy for sustainable development: (1) Participate in the programmatic/administrative tasks to prepare the team’s work programme; propose resources for completion of activities; report on budget/programme performance in addition to the preparation of input for results-based budgeting. (2) Contribute to the preparation of substantive studies on energy for sustainable development; reviewing and preparing reports, periodic surveys, background documentation for meetings and other purposes related to energy. (3) Contribute to the organization of meetings, workshops, seminars, etc. on relevant substantive-related issues. Assist in the management of the substantive preparation and organization of such meetings and seminars. (4) Assist in identifying the regional challenges induced by climate change and assist in promoting climate change mitigation measures in the energy sector. (5) Keep abreast of industry and market developments related to energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies; establishes and maintain relations with government departments, international organizations and the business community to enlist their support and contributions to the areas of work described above. (6) Cooperate with and contributes to the work of other ESCWA’s Division, United Nations bodies and participate in international, regional or national meetings, and provide inputs on relevant issues (7) perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Division as required.
Competencies Professionalism: Proven technical expertise and understanding in Energy and relevant sustainable development issues. Planning and organizing: Proven ability to plan and organize work; In-depth understanding of its strategic direction; ability to service inter-governmental bodies and technical meetings. Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills, effective written, oral and presentation skills, particularly ability to present information in a concise and accurate manner. Teamwork: Ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds with respect for diversity.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in electrical or mechanical engineering, physical science or related fields. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advance university degree.
Work Experience At least five years of progressively related professional experience at the national and regional levels in the field of energy for sustainable development with particular focus on energy efficiency, clean fuels and climate change mitigation measures.
Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in written and oral Arabic is desirable and knowledge of French is an asset.
Other Skills Proficiency in computer system such as MS office (Word, Excel, etc.) is required.
